LIS 417: Subject Cataloging and Classification

Your mission:

  1. To examine the aboutness of the items provided
  2. To post an aboutness statement for each item in the Moodle Forums
  3. To discuss the aboutness of each item with your peers
  4. To work through issues to come to a consensus regarding its aboutness
  5. To work together to develop an agreed-upon aboutness statement

Due dates:

Tuesday, Jan 23 at 5pm - Friday, Jan 26 at 11:30pm: Please start posting your aboutness statements for each item. Please do not read or comment on each other's statements until they are all posted. You are to post a statement for each item.

Saturday, Jan 27 at 12:01 am - Monday, Jan 29 at 12 noon: Please read and discuss the aboutness statements written by your classmates. Discuss vigorously, but always be respectful. We are looking to come to consensus about each item's aboutness. Work through questions and issues. Everyone is expected to post about each item (and more than once)!

Monday, Jan 29 at 12 noon - Tuesday, Jan 30 at 8am: Discussion board leaders will create a statement to summarize the aboutness of the item based on the discussions that have occurred. They must be posted by 8am the next day.

Tuesday, Jan 30 at 2pm: Preliminary statements will be reviewed in class. Questions will be raised. Unresolved issues will be identified. Suggestions will be made.

Tuesday, Jan 30 at 5pm - Monday, Feb 5 at 6pm: Please comment on, discuss, and refine the aboutness statements that have been compiled. Everyone is expected to participate in the revisions of each item. This is the point where people sometimes don't participate fully, but this is actually a discussion; let's discuss!

Monday, Feb 5 at 6pm - Tuesday, Feb 6 at 8am: Discussion board leaders will compile final statements based on the discussions. Leaders will post the final aboutness statements in Moodle by 8am at the latest.

Tuesday, Feb 6 at 2pm: Final statements will be reviewed in class.

Hint: Plan to be on the discussion boards heavily throughout your first two weeks of class. I want to see thoughtful analysis, insightful discussion, and strong, full participation by everyone!
