- American Society for Information Science & Technology, Special Interest Group on Classification Research
- ASIS&T's SIG/CR holds an annual workshop at the national conference, featuring refereed papers. Proceedings are published.
- American Society for Indexing
- ASI has a well-organized collection of resources, including pages on thesaurus construction, thesaurus management software, and thesauri online. ASI holds annual and regional meetings, and publishes many specialized books on indexing, as well as The Indexer, and the newsletter Key Words. The site has a detailed index. There is a New England Chapter
- Australian and New Zealand Society of Indexers
- AusSI has a good collection of resources, with, of course, an index.
- Classification Society of North America
- The CSNA holds meetings, mounts bibliographies, publishes a newsletter and the Journal of Classification, and hosts a listserv list, CLASS-L.

- Massive collection of bookmarks and citations maintained by Mary Sue Stephenson. - Marcia Bates
- One of the most influential people in the field, well regarded by librarians, information scientists, and information architects alike. Links to many of her publications.

- Faculty member at Berkeley, Marti does research in user interface design. She is responsible for such projects as TileBars and FLAMENCO.
- Networked Knowledge Organization Systems/Services (NKOS)
- "Devoted to the discussion of the functional and data model for enabling knowledge organization systems (KOS)." The NKOS list is archived from June 24, 2001 at OCLC.

- In addition to working with metadata and the RDF, OCLC is engaged in a number of projects concerned with extending the application of classification schemes and controlled vocabularies through various algorithmic methods. - A faculty member at the U of Western Ontario, Craven maintains software for such activities as word and phrase extraction, string indexing, abstract writing, thesaurus construction (including an online tutorial), and Web document indexing.
