Orlando 2004

American Library Association
Annual Conference

The 2004 Annual Conference was held in Orlando, FL from June 24-30, 2004, at the Orange County Convention Center and sites all over the International Drive resort area. The exhibits were held from June 26-29, 2004 in the O.C.C.C.

Meetings and workshops were held for every ALA section, affiliate and round table. In addition, ALA-presented programs included important addresses by Richard Clarke (former White House terrorism adviser), and Taylor Branch (1988 Pulitzer Prize winner for Parting the Waters: America in the King Years, 1954-1963); a special pre-release screening of Fahrenheit 9/11 wowed a large crowd.

A panel discussion in commemmoration of the 1954 Brown v Board of Education decision included Taylor Branch, Cheryl Brown Henderson (whose father filed the suit), Ray Suarez (senior correspondent for PBS’s News Hour with Jim Lehrer and NPR presenter) and E.J. Josey (past president of the ALA and founder of the Black Caucus of the ALA).

Authors were well-represented, some being presented by ALA and some by their publishers. Miami Herald columnist and popular novelist Carl Hiaasen was presented by the Public Library Association; Ragtime author E.L. Doctorow spoke, as did Amy Goodman, author of The Exception to the Rulers. Nancy Pearl, everone's favorite action-figure, was represented, and noted British author Sir Arthur C. Clarke was interviewed via live link from his home in Sri Lanka. A presentation by Scholastic Press celebrated Sharon Robinson's new book Promises to Keep (her story of her relationship with her father, Jackie Robinson).
