About ASIS&T

The American Society for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T) draws together over 4000 professionals whose common interest is the generation, organization, and use of information, with an emphasis on research and the applications of new technology.

For over 60 years, ASIS&T has been the focal point for people concerned with both the philosophy and the reality of effective information storage and retrieval. If your professional goals include satisfying the information needs of clients and colleagues, understanding and affecting the national or international information policies of governments and companies, or improving productivity through information retrieval, then consider ASIS&T.

ASIS&T holds two national meetings a year. Every year, Simmons College Student Chapter members have attended the annual ASIST meeting to make connections and have a great time. The Simmons College Student Chapter was named "Student Chapter of the Year" for the three years in a row!

ASIS&T also publishes JASIS&T, the Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, a scholarly research publication, and the Bulletin of the American Society for Information Science and Technology. The Bulletin contains shorter articles on a current theme along with news, calendars, and miscellanea. Both are part of the Simmons GSLIS collection, and are also available online.

ASIS&T Special Interest Groups (SIGs) focus on applications or subject areas, and run sessions at the annual meetings. Examples of SIGs include Information Architecture (IA), Library Automation and Networks (LAN), and Classification Research (CR). Take a look at our resources page for more information on the various SIGs and what they are about. (Student members can choose one free SIG membership.)

About The New England Chapter of ASIS&T

NEASIS&T, the New England Chapter of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, is one of the oldest local ASIS&T chapters. It publishes newsletters and holds regular meetings, usually in or near Boston.

NEASIS&T also awards an annual travel stipend for student attendance at the annual meeting. You can learn more about NEASIS&T's annual travel award on their site.

About The Simmons College Chapter of ASIS&T

Simmons College is home to one of the first ASIS&T Student Chapters. The Student Chapter has its own website, elects officers, and sponsors the Outstanding Information Science Student of the Year Award, which is presented at the May commencement breakfast.

The Student Chapter also runs programs of interest to students. Past examples include tours of local information settings, workshops at Simmons on technical topics, and panel discussions about various associations or alternative careers in information science and technology. While most Student Chapter events are open to all students, preference is given to ASIS&T members for programs with limited space.
