Simmons ASIS&T News & Events
Chapter Meeting Minutes
October 6, 2005
The 13 members present were: Arun Sannuti, Emily Belanger, Jennifer Lege, Julka Grodel, Corinna Baksik, Karen Green, Frances McConihe, Eva Radding, Bill Sloan, Heather Soyk, Carolyn Ziering, Nancy King, and Kjersten Elias.
Attendees introduced themselves and signed the sign-in sheet.
The chair then announced the following upcoming chapter event:
ASIS&T party at the flat of our chapter advisor, Professor Candy Schwartz, on October 24, at 6:00pm. It will be a potluck party, BYOB. This event is for members only, no significant others, 25 attendees maximum. Invitations will be issued on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please RSVP to chapter chair, Kjersten Elias.
We discussed a possible fourth and fifth event for the semester:
- Presentations from the ASIS&T Annual Meeting, to be given by the students who attended the Annual Meeting in Charlotte, North Carolina. This presentation will count towards the student's requirements for LISSA reimbursement.
- The Ins and Outs of Software licensing (talk by Michael Klein, program developer of 15 years) - arranged by speaker
We had been thinking of a tour of the MIT Media Lab but the lab does not give tours so this idea is out unless we find a connection.
Arun Sannuti will look into getting a speaker from New York to lecture on copyright and intellectual property issues.
A tour of WGBH video collections is a possible event for the spring. The dean knows people at the station and may be able to help us arrange
Two useful "how-to" events would be on: a) the use and administration of wikis or b) the design RSS feeds.
Times, dates, and locations for all events can be found on the chapter website.
The chapter also discussed the Simmons ASIS&T Service Award. New this year, Simmons ASIS&T will award one member for their outstanding contributions to the chapter. (The chapter chair is ineligible.) A month before the end of the semester, the chair will send a notice over the ASIS&T listserv requesting nominations for members who have made a difference in the life of the chapter over the past semester. Nominations will be accepted over a period of two weeks. At the end of the two weeks, a jury of three ineligible members (including the chair) will convene to decide the awardee. This award will be given at the end of the fall and spring semesters.
