As the body of electronic scholarly publishing has increased, so has concern about its long-term preservation and future accessibility. Accordingly, various digital archive initiatives have been developed to address these concerns. Essential to the building of these archives is the development of publishing standards that permit document interchange and interoperability.
A major standard for e-journal publishing is the Journal Publishing XML DTD and schema (NLM DTD), promoted by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) for the creation of journal content in XML and now used by many other scholarly publishers. E-publishing professional Bruce Rosenblum will describe the development of the NLM DTD and its role in the development of Portico, a permanent archive of electronic scholarly journals that is funded by JSTOR, The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Ithaka, and The Library of Congress. Bruce will also discuss current and future prospects for the publication of e-journals, an issue of growing concern for LIS professionals.
