History & Collections


The National Library, a public institution under the Ministry of Culture from 1982, was established in 1835.It is the country's oldest cultural institution. The building it currently occupies was contructed for it in 1958. The holdings on humanities are the strongest. It has a special collection of about 70,000 volumes on Algeria.The library has a large reading room which seats about 450.
