Chad, a republic in central western Africa, is bordered by Libya on the north, Sudan on the cast, the Central African Republic on the south, and Cameroon, Nigeria, and Niger on the west. Population (1990 est.) 5,679,000; area 1,284,000 sq.km. The official language is French.
The Library of the University of Chad, in N'Djamena, was founded with the university itself in 1971 and consists of three collections: the Central University Library with just over 12,000 volumes and 41 current periodicals; the Library of the Institut Universitaire des Sciences, in Farcha, which offers some 1,500 volumes relating to the physical and biological sciences; and the collection of the Institut Universitaire des Techniques de l'E'levage with its 500 volumes and 20 periodicals.
