General information about the current state of library resources in Comoros:


Comoros is not located on major "information highways". The lack of information and high illiteracy level (50% of the population) prevent information services from being really efficient.


Dr. Hamadi is an agricultural engineer who is currently assisting in the process of setting up an information management division within the Comoros government's Enviromental Branch; it will be called the Centre Comorien de Documentation sur l'Enviroment (CCDE). A data base is being designed to collect, classify and disseminate all documents relating to the environment of Comoros. The CCDE will also have a physical library and a cartographic department.


Currently the only library in Comoros that has any information on local enviromental issues is the Centre National de Documentation et de Recherche Scientifique (CNDRS). The CNDRS was not able to assist with Dr. Hamadi's project since its collection has been evaluated as strong or weak depending on the field. The Bibliotheque Nationale des Comores currently contains no information on enviroment issues.
