The National Library was officially founded in 1958, but that was but renaming what had been the library of the local Institut Francais d'Afrique Noire(IFAN) in the capital city, Conakry. An attempt was made to turn it into a public library, but it had neither trained personnel nor budget. It has 40,000 volumes, also special collection on slavery (about 500 books, pamphlets and MSS); 225 current periodicals; and courses on librarianship.
