History & Collections


The National Library, in Kigali, acquires and preserves materials on Rwanda and those published by Rwandans. It also acquires reference and general works, emphasizes Africana and works dealing with Rwanda's neighbors. It operates interlibrary loans and creates and promotes public reading centers. It has departments dealing with acquisitions, monographs, periodicals, and official publications. By 1990 it contained about 6,000 volumes.


The Information and National Archives Service includes the Central Archives Repository and Pre-archiving Sector. The Repository preserves public archives from the pre-independence period. There are also some small private archives deposits, most of them belonging to religious communities, that are considered to be well kept. The Archives of the the Kabgayi Bishopric, for example, deal mainly with the history of the Catholic Church in Rwanda.
