The King Fahd National Library opened in 1989 with an area of 23,000 square miles, nearly 150 employees, and collections totaling almost 225,000 items. Its staff planned to carry out the normal work of a national library, including pressing for a deposit law, developing a national bibliography, and leading and coordinating library activities in the country.
