The ALA Presidential Candidate Who Deserves Our Support Ching-chih Chen has been nominated as a candidate for President Elect of the American Library association (ALA). Dr. Chen, who is a Professor and Associate Dean of the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Simmons College, has spent over 35 years serving the library and information science community as an award-winning public and academic librarian. She is a prolific writer of 26 books and over 100 journal articles and reports, a devoted educator for more than 60 trainning institutes for public and school librarians, an activist on the ALA Council, and LITA Board of Directors with recognition from LITA/Gaylord Award and LITA/Hi Tech Award, and a technology innovator who pioneered the award winning interactive multimedia product, "The First Emperor of China" CD-ROM. Ching-chih Chen's professional involvement also includes authoring the document on citizen's information needs for the First White House Conference; serving three terms on the ALA Councilor-at-Large and the Council-elected Assembly of Planning and Budget; and chairing the Council Committee on Legislation. She is also actively involved in American Society for Informatin science (ASIS), the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Throughout her career, Ching-chih Chen has placed information access as her top priority, and has been championing a free and open information society with better services and equal access. Her agenda include: positioning libraries for the central role of information age; preparing librarians to face social and technological challenges; advocating the value of libraries; campaigning for more funding for library and information services; ensuring adequate services to children and young adults; promoting equity for library and information professionals; strengthening programs of cultural diversity; increasing ALA membership participation; improving management structure of ALA. With her candidacy for the presidential election, Ching-chih Chen brings to ALA a fresh new face of diversity, not only from her cultural and ethnic background, but more importantly from her experience working with professionals across genders and types of libraries, from federal to local levels. She is the candidate who most deserves our support.
