Ching-chih Chen

For thirty years Dr. Chen has served the library and information science profession as an outstanding scholar, researcher, educator, innovator, and prolific author. She has excelled in all areas recognized in the criteria for this award: distinguished leadership, notable development or application of technology, superior accomplishment in research or education, and original contribution to the literature of the field. In recent years Dr. Chen has been in the forefront of interpreting and integrating state-of-the-art information technologies into library service. Her proven areas of competence include hypermedia/multimedia technologies and applications, and optical technologies and microcomputer utilization.

This award especially recognizes Dr. Chen's pioneering role and achievements as Project Director and Principal Investigator of the "PROJECT EMPEROR-I: China's Treasure Revealed via Videodisc Technology," supported largely by grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities. PROJECT EMPEROR-I employs leading-edge interactive videodisc technologies to provide multimedia information on the First Emperor of China and his terracotta army of warriors and horses to both humanities scholars and laymen.

Dr. Chen has demonstrated remarkable vision, distinguished leadership, and productive energy in the interpretation, development, and application of new information technologies. Her knowledge, creativity, and commitment to excellence have tremendously benefitted her many students and all who serve in the library and information science profession.
