History & Collections
The National Library founded on June 23, 1821, by Mariscal Andres de Santa Cruz and reorganized in 1938--is in Sucre, the official capital of the country (La Pat in the political capital). It houses about 150,000 volumes. The main part of the collection is made up of 19th-century publications. The National Archive, founded in 1883, is at the National Library. The National Depository Library is in La Pat and functions as the legal depository.
