History & Collections

TheNational Library contains 706,000 volumes, 263.600 manuscripts, 11,800 maps, and almost two million issues of periodical publications and newspapers. It is especially strong in Peruvian history, literature, and law.

The National Library was once called the Biblioteca Publica, or public library. However, although open to the general public, it is not permitted by law to allow borrowing privileges. It publishes the Annuario Bibliografico Peruano ("Annual  Bibliography  of Peru"), as well as the Boletin de la Biblioteca Nacional ("National Library Bulletin"), the Gaceta Bibliotecaria del Peru ("Peruvian Librarian's Gazette"), and other publications.

The Archive General de la Nacion, founded in 1861, and the Biblioteca del Institute Nacional both complement the National Library's activities, the latter having participated closely in the identification and classification of Peruvian publications.
