History & Collections
The public library, founded in Montevideo in 1816, was the antecedent of the National Library. Invading Portuguese forces destroyed its collections eight months after it opened; it finally reopened in 1838, assuming simultaneously the roles of a national, research, and public library. The Copyright Law of 1970 requires publishers to deposit two copies of all printed materials in the National Library and one in the library of the Palacio Lepislativo. The collection consists of 900,000 books, 800,000 manuscrpts and related items, 35,000 pamphlets, and 20,000 serial titles. The Library serves more than 150,000 readers annually. It has published the national bibliography, Anuario Bibliografico Uruguayo, since 1946. The Cenrro Nacional de Documentacion Cientifica. Tecnica Econdmica (Center for Scientific, Technical, and. Elconomic Documencacion) is attached to the National Library.
