The Estonian State Library, established in Tallinn in 1918
as a parliamentary library, gained depository right in 1919 to a copy of
every item printed in Esronia. It was named the State Library of the Estonian
S.S.R. (1940-53), the F. R. Kreutzwald Librar (1953-88). and the National
Library of Estonia (l988- ). The National Library of Estonia Act
of 1990 lists its tasks: to collect, preserve, and make accessible printed
matter published in Estonia. in the Estonian language. or about Estonia;
to introduce world culture: to compile and publish the national bibliography:
to conduct research in library science, bibliography and information science;
and to receive and preserve literature that is valuable but not widely
used. The Library also serves as a parliamentary library providing reference
service for deputies and government officials. Its holdines in 1990 included
2.100.000 books, 6.000 cartographic manuscripts and printed
works, 93,000 graphic items, and
1.600 musical recordings. The National Archival Collcrtion
was founded in 1935.
