History & Collections
The National Library was founded in 1935 as the Central State Library.
It continues the traditions of earlier libraries in Bucharest, but administrative
structures changed greatly over time. The collections are encyclopedic
in character, and by the late 1980s they totaled
more than 15,800,000 volumes. The National Library has
the right of central legal deposit and publishes national current bibliographies
and the Narional Bibliogray; makes up the national union catalogue on cards;
and
publishes directiones and union catalogues of foreign books and serials,
among other activities.
The National Library has a nucleus of documentation in librarianship and a center of methodological guidance for public libraries. It also houses an agency for international exchange of publicacions and manages international interlibrary loans. It has several reading rooms specialized by fields of knowledge and by categories or publications and media (such as manuscripts and letters, Romanian bibliophilic books, foreign bibliophilic books, maps, loose sheets, and newspapers); there is also a department for official publications and offices for Unesco publications and publications of other international bodies. Educational activities include organizing exthibitions, meetings with wrirers and scholars, musical programs. and other events.
