Abstract: The use of information technology in developing countries has been increasing and thus, the production of information products mainly different types of databases: Bibliographic, some statistical, has started to be produced and exchanged and very little has been marketed. Few of these products have been set on CD-ROMs. The perspective of globally marketing a small or medium size product from a developing country and possible alternatives for improving the distribution of this information are discussed.

OPEN SYSTEMS AND INFORMATION ACTIVITIES

Sistemas Abiertos y Nuevas Tecnologias

Enzo Molino

Abstract: Computer use for information activities has gone through several stages, mainframes in batch, on-line access, microcomputers, and LANs. More recently, network interconnection is becoming increasingly important. Growing usage of electronic mail, document delivery systems, and other cooperative arrangements, has reinforced the need for standards to allow easier exchange and connectivity between computer systems. Open systems and related standards such as UNIX, X-Windows, X.25 networks, OSI, X.400 are becoming a necessity. Therefore, it is important to take them into account in order to avoid dangers of binding solutions to non-compatible technologies. Also important is the reconsideration of the common belief in developing countries, that the MS-DOS machine as "the" solution for information activities. With the availability of small cost machines that support open systems, it is now possible to have broader and more powerful solutions.
