Abstract: The Slovak Republic is a part of Czecho-Slovak Federal Republic. In Slovakia there are about 9000 libraries with a stock of about 60,000,000 library units. Since November 17, 1989, the Slovak librarianship faced new global tasks and strategic goals. One of the long-term strategic goals is the substantial improve-ment of the quality and structure of library services. This cannot be achieved with-out extensive implementation of computer technology in the Slovak libraries. Two main programs exist in Slovakia in this area:

1. Computerizing of libraries and establishing a national integrated library and information system, IKIS;
2. Retrospective conversion of catalogs.

Establishing an integrated library and information system as well as a co-operative association of libraries is considered to be a topical task. From 1985 to 1990 the author was the project leader responsible for establishing such a nation-wide integrated library and information system in Slovakia, IKIS. The results of project research have been implemented under the aegis of the Slovak National Library. The author summarizes the following main results of the project: methodology of the research, designing technology, software tools, implementation and prospect of developing a system. The goals of IKIS are: improving library services, establishing share cataloging and a national union catalog. IKIS as a whole is focused on integrated libraries, co-operation, de-centralization and making the national library system more productive, effective and user friendly.
