General Information

SOM ALUMNAE BOARD STUDENT REPRESENTATIVES NEED TO BE APPROVED BY THE GRADUATING '05 CLASS
The Simmons School of Management Alumnae Board (SGSMAA) has placed in the mailboxes of students graduating in '05, their recommended slate of candidates for student rep's. Please vote no later than Monday, January 10.

NOTE FROM MARY D Welcome to all the students that started in the January 2005 class and welcome back to all returning students! Foundations is running this week and Saturday and we are off to another wonderful start! Many of the returning students wished they had another couple of days off, but most seem reasonably happy to be back!!

Invitation to attend a presentation in Strategic Management
The SOM is currently conducting a search to fill a new faculty position in strategy. This position, The Roslyn Solomon Jaffe Chair in Strategy, will entail teaching strategy at both the undergraduate and MBA levels and engaging in scholarly research in strategic management. The Search Committee has identified some strong candidates who will be presenting to several members of the SOM Community. The committee would like to invite students to attend this presentation and provide feedback.

The next presentation will take place on January 14th at 10:00am in the Green Room.

Please RSVP to Annie Kelleher [annie.kelleher@simmons.edu] by end of day Wednesday, January 12th.

Study rooms in Library
Please be advised that all the study rooms in 419 are reserved from 10am - 1pm on Saturday for Foundations.

Emergency Closing Information
In the event of a snow, storm or emergency closing, we will inform WBZ 1030 (AM) radio and WBZ-TV Channel 4 television. We will make every effort to insure that announcements are made beginning with the 6:30 a.m. newscast. We advise members of the community who commute from long distances to delay their departures until complete cancellation information is available.

We also will broadcast a voice mail message over the SOM's telephone system. Students can call (617)521-3810, for school closing information. We will make every effort to keep the College open during a snowstorm, including making use of delayed openings.

The broadcast and voicemail announcement will specify delayed opening time for day classes. In the event that evening classes must be canceled, we will make a separate announcement by mid-afternoon.

Student Stickers
Spring Stickers for your ID are here in the MBA Office. Please come by to pick up yours.

Student Business Cards
Students interested in ordering business cards should email Paula at paula.donaldson@simmons.edu. Please include your name, class year (it will read: MBA Candidate '05), phone, fax, and email. Cards will cost somewhere between $30 - $40 for 250. The more students who order, the cheaper the price will be. Please email by 1/14 if you are interested.

SHORT TERM PAID JOB OPPORTUNITY TO BE FILLED ASAP
$12/hr - Dean's office-administrative clerical help, 1-2 hours a day, please contact Annie at 521-3817.

Raise Your Voice announces Real Change!
Real Change is an opportunity for college students in Massachusetts and Rhode Island to launch an idea that will spark change either on their campus or in the community. This is an opportunity to share your hope for a stronger community, your belief that it can happen, and your willingness to begin it. Students will make their pitch with a short essay. Three ideas will be chosen from the submissions to receive $500 each to make their idea for change a reality.

STUDENTS: identify one current problem that you see on your campus or in the community and tell us how you intend to change it. We'll give you money to get you started. We'll be here as a resource for you as you do it. We'll support you as make that change happen.

College students can make a real difference and they are making change. College students in Massachusetts and Rhode Island make up a group of over 400,000 individuals with ideas, voices and actions, ready to lead this generation and determine the future of our country. Student action can generate social consciousness, cohesiveness and responsiveness to issues important not only to students and campuses but to society at large.

Essay deadline is at noon on Friday, February 11. Entrants will be notified by February 25.

For information on the campaign, go to www.raiseyourvoice.org. This campaign is funded by Campus Compact through a grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts.

Course Material Update: Gender and Leadership
Due to a vendor problem, the Gender and Leadership course pack did not print properly. The bookstore has pulled those coursepacks off the shelf and the vendor is reprinting the material as we speak. The course packs should be available over the break and will be available during the first week of the spring semester. Call the bookstore directly to confirm that they have arrived if you plan on making a trip over the break. The maincampus bookstore can be reached at 617-521-2054 (ask for Deb or Brooke) or at the 419 building at 617-521-3815 (ask for Dulce).

Student Clubs

Student Clubs at the SOM are run by and organized by SOM students. The MBA Office Staff assists with the transition from one year to the next by gathering names of interested students and by setting up each club in WebCT.

Let's start a Yoga Club!
We have an experienced teacher, who is also a Simmons alumnus, who is willing to lead the class. Most likely it will be a distressing class with modifications for more experienced students. All levels are welcome and the class will be structured around the needs of the students. It will be open to SOM students, faculty and staff.

Tentative plans are to meet for 10 weeks during the Spring '05 semester on Thursdays from 3:30 to around 4:45/5:00 possibly in the Purple room at 409 Commonwealth. We will be able to subsidize the cost of the class with the club allowance, but there will be a charge, possibly around $50 for the semester ($5/class) depending on the amount of people willing to pay up front. Other arrangements can be made with the instructor (drop-ins or reduced fee depending on financial need).

To get the ball rolling we need to know how many people can make a commitment. Please email sharon.dudelson@simmons.edu if you are interested, are able to make a 10 week financial commitment, and if the day and time works for you. Please respond by Monday, January 10th.

Please note that this club is in the works so changes might be made according to the availability of the yoga teacher and the requirements of Simmons SOM.
