Dividing your courses over 2 different academic years for the one-year track is a benefit for you financially. By borrowing over two academic years, you have increased your federal loan eligibility and reduced your necessity to seek outside loan assistance. You will be able to finance your entire summer term costs through federal programs, eliminating your need borrow through alternative loan programs, which saves you money over the term of your loan repayment. 1325 Three Years On: Gender, Security, and Organizational Change

On October 31, 2000, the UN Security Council passed Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. 1325 marks the international community's formal recognition of the necessity to integrate both “women” and a “gender perspective” into decision-making in national, regional and international institutions and mechanisms for the prevention, management, and resolution of conflict It acknowledges women's capacities and rights to participate in peace processes and in security decision-making, and it spells out action that need to be taken by the UN itself as well as member states and humanitarian agencies to protect women in conflict zones and to mainstream gender in UN reporting systems and implementation mechanisms. At a rhetorical level, 1325 represents a stunning, radical shift because it is the first time the Security Council has addressed women at all, except in passing as a “vulnerable group” in armed conflict.

In short, 1325 puts women squarely in the center of efforts to end armed conflicts and create sustainable peace. But has the rhetoric been followed by a transformation of UN policies and practices? What are the barriers to institutional change at the UN, and in other security organizations?

Come hear what we can learn from the work of feminists who have been trying to move 1325 from rhetoric to reality, and share your ideas and experiences about the best strategies for moving forward. Speakers include:

Carol Cohn, Senior Fellow with the Boston Consortium for Gender, Security, and Human Rights

Also, printing from the color ink-jet printer takes longer than the laser-jet. Please be patient and refrain from sending multiple print jobs of the same document to the printer.

SOM in the News

SOM Professor Mary Shapiro was featured in the “Hello There” column in the December 23 Boston Metro. The column focused on the book she and fellow SOM Professor Cynthia Ingols co-authored in 2003, Your Job Interview: An Easy, Smart Guide to Interview Success.

SOM Associate Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands was quoted in a January 6 Boston Herald article, “Executive Action: Professional education programs do a brisk business in current economy.” In the article, Merrill-Sands says the women-focused Simmons Executive Education programs have seen modest growth despite the poor economy because they are a “niche player.”

SOM was prominently featured in the article “Business Schools Tackle Today’s Challenges” apprearing in the January issue of Women’s Business Boston. Citing the recent SOM/The Committee of 200 national “Teen Girls on Business: Are they being empowered?” study, Dean Patricia O'Brien says increasing the female applicant pool is a marketing challenge facing all MBA programs, and should be started as early as the junior high school level. Gail Deegan SOM ’78 was also mentioned in the article as encouraging teen girls toward business careers in the Girl Scouts’ Camp CEO program. The article was written by Lucy Sutherland SOM ’00.
