Closing Information We also will broadcast a voice mail message over the SOM's telephone system. Students can call (617)521-3810, for school closing information. We will make every effort to keep the College open during a snowstorm, including making use of delayed openings. The broadcast and voicemail announcement will specify delayed opening time for day classes. In the event that evening classes must be canceled, we will make a separate announcement by mid-afternoon. We'll give you money to get you started. We'll be here as a resource for you as you do it. We'll support you as make that change happen. College students can make a real difference and they are making change. College students in Massachusetts and Rhode Island make up a group of over 400,000 individuals with ideas, voices and actions, ready to lead this generation and determine the future of our country. Student action can generate social consciousness, cohesiveness and responsiveness to issues important not only to students and campuses but to society at large. Essay

INTERNAL EVENTS: No Events this Week. EXTERNAL EVENTS: From
the Career Services Office: From
the Career Services Office: The Forum lasts one week. In the course of Forum USA 2004, 1100 recent university graduates met with representatives from 40 French companies, associations and research institutes. Thanks to the Forum USA, recruiters issued more than 150 jobs and internship offers and selected more than 325 candidates for second-round interviews. Forum USA is originally focused on students specialized in engineering and hard sciences - cf. the statistics regarding the candidates who attended Forum USA 2004. As we did last year we have widened our focus to include candidates having an MBA to better respond to recruiters' needs. Similarly, newly arrived non-French candidates will likely comprise 25-35% of forum attendants. Forum USA 2005 will be held consecutively in Boston (April 2, 3 &4) and San Francisco (April 6 & 7). The Forum USA will make candidates' resumes available to the exhibitors and will schedule interviews for them. Candidates can register for the event through our website at www.forumusa.org until February 15th 2005. Note that Forum USA offers a free night in the hotel the night before the event for the first 100 registrants for Boston and the first 60 registrants for San Francisco (candidates must live at least 60 miles from the Forum to be eligible). From
the Career Services Office Representatives of international companies will be recruiting for permanent positions and internships worldwide. Although the focus of the career fair is on the European job market, companies attending the fair have recruited for positions in the USA and other countries in the past. All areas of research and study are welcome! We do encourage graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to attend as well as undergraduates and young professionals. Participation in this event: - is NOT limited to members of MIT community. - is NOT limited to European citizens. Following
is a selection of companies that have attended the career fair in the
past: From
the Career Services Office Join us for a great evening of networking and job hunting, including special presentations for job seekers, a chance to meet personally with major company representatives, and light food and beverages. Programs and opportunities are geared to career veterans and to those transitioning into the Medical Device industry. February

Student Clubs at the SOM are run by and organized by SOM students. The MBA Office Staff assists with the transition from one year to the next by gathering names of interested students and by setting up each club in WebCT. Yoga
Club Update It is going to be a 75-minutes class will focus on shoulder/chest, lower back, hips and knees. Emphasis is on opening, stretching, strengthening and aligning. Practice includes asanas (postures), pranayama (breathe work), and a final meditation. It is important that each student bring a yoga mat, and wear comfortable, non-restricting clothing. We hope to start the first class next Wednesday, January 19, 2005. Members will be notified with the room location. Please email sharon.dudelson@simmons.edu if there is a question with the day/time/fee, and email the instructor barbara_dummermuth@yahoo.com if you have any questions regarding the structure of the class. The cost is $70 for 10 weeks to be paid to the instructor at the first class for all club members. Non-member drop-ins will be allowed after the first class on a space available basis at $10/class. |

RESEARCH Last November and December, CGO Senior Research Faculty Evangelina Holvino spoke at three PepsiCo Women of Color Multicultural Alliance meetings. The meetings took place in Chicago, Dallas, and Westchester, NY, and were held for the company’s women executives. Holvino’s presentation was entitled “Leveraging your Support to Enhance your Career.” On December 9th, SOM Professor Mary Shapiro gave a talk, “Presenting with Credibility & Authority,” to Verizon employees in Boston. Deborah M. Kolb, the Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor for Women and Leadership, will speak to 75 top women executives of the Campbell Soup Co. in Philadelphia on January 12. Her talk is entitled “Everyday Negotiation: Creating the Conditions for Leadership Success.” On February 1, Acting Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands will be a panelist at the National Council for Research on Women’s Corporate Circle meeting entitled “Opting Out: Myth, Viable Option, or Media Spin.” The event takes place in New York City. Deborah M. Kolb, the Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor for Women and Leadership, had excerpts from her recent book, Her Place at the Table: A Woman’s Guide to Negotiating the Five Key Challenges to Leadership Success, featured in the January issue of Women’s Business. Deborah M. Kolb, the Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor for Women and Leadership, was quoted in the October 18 issue of the Philadelphia Metro. In the article “Work Savvy Secrets for Women,” Kolb explains that savviness is knowing how to negotiate, which brings about the conditions for individual success. The Simmons School of Management was featured prominently in the January 4th Boston Herald article “Turning Up the Degrees.” Assistant Dean of MBA Admissions Andrea Bruce was quoted saying that one-third of the students entering the Simmons MBA program are coming from the non-profit sector, and this has been consistent for four years. Eleni Carr SOM ’05 was quoted as one of those non-profit sector MBA students whose careers are benefiting from the MBA training. Sherry Gordon SOM ’79 recently sold her start-up company Valuedge, Inc., of Lexington to Burlington-based Emptoris. Gordon was the founder, president, and CEO of the supplier and enterprise assessment solutions organization. Gordon will become the Vice President of Supplier Performance Intelligence at Emptoris. |
