General Information

MBA OFFICE COVERAGE
Monday, January 17, Martin Luther King Day Holiday, MBA office will be open from 4-8pm to cover evening classes. Marketing, Leading and Public Speaking all running as scheduled.

NOTE FROM MARY D
We have just started a new term, many students have just started with us in the MBA Program, and another group of you have graduation squarely in sight, so here is my quote for the week from William Jennings Bryan-"Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved."

If the Patriot's win this weekend, I will find a new connection to your MBA program next week!

Volunteer Opportunity
Volunteers are needed for the 2005 tax season. Boston Mayor Menino's Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition seeks volunteers from January to April who can assist in helping low- to moderate-income households prepare their tax returns for electronic filing. Community tax volunteers get to be on the front lines of an anti-poverty effort which brings more people out of poverty than any other federal program---in 2005, we expect that volunteer tax preparers will put more than $9 million back into the pockets of hard working Bostonians.

Volunteers can expect to attend classroom training sessions in January 2005 as well as participate in some online tax law education. We hope that each volunteer will dedicate 3 or 4 hours per week at a particular tax preparation site. Volunteers can select from 19 different tax preparation sites located across the City of Boston.

You can visit http://www.cityofboston.gov/bra/eitc/volunteer.asp for more detailed volunteering information and to sign up! (Be sure you list "Simmons School of Management" in the space designated for your company.)

You can visit http://www.bostontaxhelp.org for more general information on the campaign and its past accomplishments.

For anyone who volunteers to participate in VITA, Mayor Menino has invited you to kickoff the Boston 2005 Earned Income Tax Campaign.
Date: January 22, 2005
Time: 11AM - Noon
Location: Dorchester House Multi Service Center, 1353 Dorchester Avenue, Fields Corner RSVP: By Wednesday, January 19 to The Mayor's Office of Jobs and Community Services, 617.918.5251

If you have any questions, please call Mimi Turchinetz, Campaign Director, at 617.918.5259.

SOMETIMES SPELL CHECK JUST ISN'T ENOUGH
Anne Drogin is an experienced writer and editor of academic papers. She earned an undergraduate degree from Wellesley College, where she taught academic writing to incoming students, and graduate degrees from Harvard Divinity School and the New England School of Acupuncture. Anne is available for a variety of editing work including helping foreign students create more readable work while maintaining their unique voices. For more information and rates, call 617-875-1143 or email vze4y4dk@verizon.net.

OPERATIONS UPDATE
We are going to put glass windows in the CR1 and CR2 doors to try and reduce the possibility of students crashing into each other entering and exiting the classrooms. We are also going to change the in/out sides of the doors as well.

Juice machine refill need has been reported!!

419 BUILDING
Please remember to not let anyone you do not know into the buildings behind you and do not prop the doors open.

Emergency Closing Information
In the event of a snow, storm or emergency closing, we will inform WBZ 1030 (AM) radio and WBZ-TV Channel 4 television. We will make every effort to insure that announcements are made beginning with the 6:30 a.m. newscast. We advise members of the community who commute from long distances to delay their departures until complete cancellation information is available.

We also will broadcast a voice mail message over the SOM's telephone system. Students can call (617)521-3810, for school closing information. We will make every effort to keep the College open during a snowstorm, including making use of delayed openings.

The broadcast and voicemail announcement will specify delayed opening time for day classes. In the event that evening classes must be canceled, we will make a separate announcement by mid-afternoon.

Student Stickers
Spring Stickers for your ID are here in the MBA Office. Please come by to pick up yours.

Raise Your Voice announces Real Change!
Real Change is an opportunity for college students in Massachusetts and Rhode Island to launch an idea that will spark change either on their campus or in the community. This is an opportunity to share your hope for a stronger community, your belief that it can happen, and your willingness to begin it. Students will make their pitch with a short essay. Three ideas will be chosen from the submissions to receive $500 each to make their idea for change a reality.

STUDENTS: identify one current problem that you see on your campus or in the community and tell us how you intend to change it. We'll give you money to get you started. We'll be here as a resource for you as you do it. We'll support you as make that change happen.

College students can make a real difference and they are making change. College students in Massachusetts and Rhode Island make up a group of over 400,000 individuals with ideas, voices and actions, ready to lead this generation and determine the future of our country. Student action can generate social consciousness, cohesiveness and responsiveness to issues important not only to students and campuses but to society at large.

Essay deadline is at noon on Friday, February 11. Entrants will be notified by February 25.

For information on the campaign, go to www.raiseyourvoice.org. This campaign is funded by Campus Compact through a grant from the Pew Charitable Trusts.

The Dynamic Women in Business Conference
Sponsored by Harvard Business School Women Student Association (WSA) On January 22, 2005, the Women's Student Association will host its 14th annual Dynamic Women in Business conference at the Harvard Business School campus in Boston. The conference will bring together more than 800 women, including students, alumnae, faculty, distinguished business leaders, and community members, to explore the opportunities and challenges facing women in today's business world. The Dynamic Women in Business conference is a powerful forum where business women can learn, share, and inspire one another.
The conference is this Saturday, January 22, 2005. Registration, speaker lunch sign ups, and breakfast begin at 8:00 am. The first keynote speech will begin at 9:00 am.
For more details and to register, please go to: http://sa.hbs.edu/wsa/conf2004/index.html

From the Career Services Office:
Forum USA
For those interested in working internationally:
The Office for Science and Technology at the Embassy of France in the United States holds the yearly "Forum USA". This event provides an opportunity to bring together students and French companies. Over the years, this event has evolved into the most significant recruitment forum of its kind in North America.

The Forum lasts one week. In the course of Forum USA 2004, 1100 recent university graduates met with representatives from 40 French companies, associations and research institutes. Thanks to the Forum USA, recruiters issued more than 150 jobs and internship offers and selected more than 325 candidates for second-round interviews.

Forum USA is originally focused on students specialized in engineering and hard sciences - cf. the statistics regarding the candidates who attended Forum USA 2004. As we did last year we have widened our focus to include candidates having an MBA to better respond to recruiters' needs. Similarly, newly arrived non-French candidates will likely comprise 25-35% of forum attendants.

Forum USA 2005 will be held consecutively in Boston (April 2, 3 &4) and San Francisco (April 6 & 7). The Forum USA will make candidates' resumes available to the exhibitors and will schedule interviews for them.

Candidates can register for the event through our website at www.forumusa.org until February 15th 2005. Note that Forum USA offers a free night in the hotel the night before the event for the first 100 registrants for Boston and the first 60 registrants for San Francisco (candidates must live at least 60 miles from the Forum to be eligible).

SOM in the News

RESEARCH

Professor Jill Kickul and MBA 05 student Laney Whitcanack returned from their trip to Russia late last month.
While in St. Petersburg and Moscow for six days in December, they continued their cross-cultural study of women entrepreneurs and forged connections between Simmons and the Baltic State Technical University in St. Petersburg. With research partner Professor Tatiana Iakovleva, a native of St. Petersburg, as a guide, highlights of the trip included learning more about the culture, politics and history of Russia through visits to the ballet and Hermitage, as well as meetings with Russian collegues, including the Deans of the International Industrial Management Department at the University. The study in St. Petersburg, as well as additional research in collaboration with the Russian Women`s Microfinance Network based in Moscow, examine a number of factors (beyond industry) that facilitate growth within women-owned businesses.

Last November and December, CGO Senior Research Faculty Evangelina Holvino spoke at three PepsiCo Women of Color Multicultural Alliance meetings. The meetings took place in Chicago, Dallas, and Westchester, NY, and were held for the company’s women executives. Holvino’s presentation was entitled “Leveraging your Support to Enhance your Career.”

On December 9th, SOM Professor Mary Shapiro gave a talk, “Presenting with Credibility & Authority,” to Verizon employees in Boston.

Deborah M. Kolb, the Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor for Women and Leadership, will speak to 75 top women executives of the Campbell Soup Co. in Philadelphia on January 12. Her talk is entitled “Everyday Negotiation: Creating the Conditions for Leadership Success.”

On February 1, Acting Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands will be a panelist at the National Council for Research on Women’s Corporate Circle meeting entitled “Opting Out: Myth, Viable Option, or Media Spin.” The event takes place in New York City.

Deborah M. Kolb, the Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor for Women and Leadership, had excerpts from her recent book, Her Place at the Table: A Woman’s Guide to Negotiating the Five Key Challenges to Leadership Success, featured in the January issue of Women’s Business.

Deborah M. Kolb, the Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor for Women and Leadership, was quoted in the October 18 issue of the Philadelphia Metro. In the article “Work Savvy Secrets for Women,” Kolb explains that savviness is knowing how to negotiate, which brings about the conditions for individual success.

The Simmons School of Management was featured prominently in the January 4th Boston Herald article “Turning Up the Degrees.” Assistant Dean of MBA Admissions Andrea Bruce was quoted saying that one-third of the students entering the Simmons MBA program are coming from the non-profit sector, and this has been consistent for four years. Eleni Carr SOM ’05 was quoted as one of those non-profit sector MBA students whose careers are benefiting from the MBA training.

Sherry Gordon SOM ’79 recently sold her start-up company Valuedge, Inc., of Lexington to Burlington-based Emptoris. Gordon was the founder, president, and CEO of the supplier and enterprise assessment solutions organization. Gordon will become the Vice President of Supplier Performance Intelligence at Emptoris.
