General Information

Boston Ad Club - Advertising/Marketing Internships
The Summer Internship Program is a cornerstone program of The Ad Club. The goal is to expose diverse students to opportunities within the Boston Advertising/Communications Industry and to help increase the level of diversity within the industry. Each year, The Ad Club signs on a number of different companies as work-site sponsors. These companies include advertising agencies, large organizations with marketing departments, media outlets and non-profit organizations. The number of internships available varies each summer.

The Summer Internship Program is a full-time (40 hours per week) for 10 weeks. This opportunity is for minority students who are juniors, seniors or graduate students who plan to pursue a career in the industry. The program runs from June 7 - August 13, 2004.

Please note: All application materials are due to The Ad Club by February 13, 2004. If you send creative samples, please provide small sizes (8 1/2 x 11) and utilize materials that we do not need to return. More info and applications at http://www.adclub.org/internship.html

SOMAA Student Representative Ballots--Ratify the Slate of Candidates Today!

SOM Students: Please complete and submit your ballot today to ratify the slate of candidates for the two student positions on the Simmons SOM Alumnae Association (SOMAA) board of directors. Ballot box and forms are located in the Mockler lobby, and ballots must be cast by January 16th.

The two candidates for the non-voting student representatives are Rocio Corona '04 and Maureen Dyer Stokes '04. If ratified, Rocio and Maureen will serve a one-year term ending January 2005. Student members represent the interests of current students, the alumnae association's pre-alumnae constituents, and attend all board meetings, held quarterly at the school, participate in monthly conference calls in the off months, as well as serve on a special committee or work on a special project during their term.

The SOMAA Board, as the leadership of the Alumnae Association, has a mission to serve alumnae and to support and advance the SOM. The board focuses on strategic issues important to furthering the interests of both groups including: fundraising, accreditation, career services, marketing, executive education, and more. In addition, in conjunction with the SOM, the Board assists in providing all alumnae with Network Magazine.

Hello & Happy 2004 from Executive Education!
The Executive Education Department wants to introduce themselves to you, and to tell you about our Department and our role at the School Management. Our Department works predominately with the business community, and delivers open enrollment and customized programs in leadership and management for mid to senior level executive women.

Over the past couple of years, we have delivered custom programs for a range of organizations, including Deloitte and Touche, ABC, the Defense Department, Massachusetts Water Resources Authority, as well as women's professional organizations.. Last year we were proud to welcome two new custom clients: Time Warner and Verizon. In the past few months we were delighted to welcome senior women executives from these companies to the SOM, including Ann Morre, CEO of Time, Pat Fili-Krushell, EVP for Administration, Time Warner, Mary Beth Bardin, Executive Vice President of Public Affairs and Communications for Verizon, and Sharon Allen, Chair of the Board of Deloitte and Touche. Our programs range from two and a half day workshops to weeklong professional development programs.

We are housed in the 411 Commonwealth Avenue building on the first floor - you have probably walked through our area en route to the MBA office and wondered who we were. We will keep you informed about our programs throughout the year, but in the meantime, please stop by and say hello when you are walking through 411. A happy and healthy new year to you from Andrea, Lisa & Laurie in Executive Education!

The Office of Student Financial Services can begin to process refunds after this date. Refunds will be made available to students within 14 calendar days after funds are received from the lender. Please be sure that the Registrar's Office has your correct address so that checks and all correspondence can be sent to the correct location. If your loan funds will fully cover your tuition charges, you do not need to make any payments to this office.

Students who are new to the MBA program are reminded to complete their Entrance Counseling and sign their promissory notes electronically. You will receive a letter from USA Group notifying you when your note is available to sign online. The entrance counseling can be completed anytime. 1325 Three Years On: Gender, Security, and Organizational Change

On October 31, 2000, the UN Security Council passed Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security. 1325 marks the international community's formal recognition of the necessity to integrate both “women” and a “gender perspective” into decision-making in national, regional and international institutions and mechanisms for the prevention, management, and resolution of conflict It acknowledges women's capacities and rights to participate in peace processes and in security decision-making, and it spells out action that need to be taken by the UN itself as well as member states and humanitarian agencies to protect women in conflict zones and to mainstream gender in UN reporting systems and implementation mechanisms. At a rhetorical level, 1325 represents a stunning, radical shift because it is the first time the Security Council has addressed women at all, except in passing as a “vulnerable group” in armed conflict.

In short, 1325 puts women squarely in the center of efforts to end armed conflicts and create sustainable peace. But has the rhetoric been followed by a transformation of UN policies and practices? What are the barriers to institutional change at the UN, and in other security organizations?

Come hear what we can learn from the work of feminists who have been trying to move 1325 from rhetoric to reality, and share your ideas and experiences about the best strategies for moving forward. Speakers include:

Carol Cohn, Senior Fellow with the Boston Consortium for Gender, Security, and Human Rights
Cynthia Enloe, Research Professor of Government and International Relations at Clark University

PRINTING
Please note that PDF files and other documents that contain graphics or are memory hungry take longer to print than your common Word document. We have also noticed that some PDF's cannot print successfully in WebCT. If you experience this issue, try emailing the PDF file to yourself and then try printing from your webmail account. Also, printing from the color ink-jet printer takes longer than the laser-jet. Please be patient and refrain from sending multiple print jobs of the same document to the printer.

SOM in the News

SOM Professor Mary Shapiro was featured in the “Hello There” column in the December 23 Boston Metro. The column focused on the book she and fellow SOM Professor Cynthia Ingols co-authored in 2003, Your Job Interview: An Easy, Smart Guide to Interview Success.

SOM Associate Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands was quoted in a January 6 Boston Herald article, “Executive Action: Professional education programs do a brisk business in current economy.” In the article, Merrill-Sands says the women-focused Simmons Executive Education programs have seen modest growth despite the poor economy because they are a “niche player.”

SOM was prominently featured in the article “Business Schools Tackle Today’s Challenges” apprearing in the January issue of Women’s Business Boston. Citing the recent SOM/The Committee of 200 national “Teen Girls on Business: Are they being empowered?” study, Dean Patricia O'Brien says increasing the female applicant pool is a marketing challenge facing all MBA programs, and should be started as early as the junior high school level. Gail Deegan SOM ’78 was also mentioned in the article as encouraging teen girls toward business careers in the Girl Scouts’ Camp CEO program. The article was written by Lucy Sutherland SOM ’00.
