General Information

MBA Certificate in Entrepreneurship
In response to the increased interest in entrepreneurial enterprises, Simmons School of Management is now offering the MBA Certificate in Entrepreneurship as an exciting enhancement to the Simmons MBA. Click here for more information.

REGISTRATION-CAREER STRATEGIES DAY SECTION UPDATE
A few students have asked if they can still register for Career Strategies A , the day section. The answer is yes!! Dates are Monday, 2/28, 9-4pm, Thursday, 3/3 from 9am-4pm, Friday, 3/4 from 1-4pm. Please call (521-3832) or email Paula (paula.donaldson@simmons.edu) in the MBA office if you still want to register.

SUMMER REGISTRATION UPDATES
We have added a section of Identifying New Business Opportunities, Pathways to New Ventures that will be a combination of Thursday nights and Saturdays to the summer schedule.

Entrepreneurship will move from a day section to a Thursday night and Saturday schedule behind the Identifying New Business Opportunities course. This course will now follow the new section of Identifying New Business Opportunities section just added above. We are looking to replace that elective in the day program.

NOTE FROM MARY D
Next week you will see in your mailbox the Noel Levitz Adult Student Satisfaction Survey. I am writing to ask for your participation and to fill this survey out when you get it. This survey is really important to our continuous improvement at the SOM as we look to see what areas we are doing well in, and what areas we need to look at more closely. I really want our school to be the leaders again in response rates for the third year in a row, so we will bribe you every night in hopes that it will increase your participation!! Some years students have filled them out before class, during the break, or after class. Some students fill them out just to have me stop asking them to do it!! Whatever it takes!! This survey allows us to compare your experience with other graduate programs at Simmons and across the country and is a very good benchmark of how we are doing. It takes about 15-20 minutes, but is really a fill in the blank response form, so it really easy. Thanks for helping us out!! Mary D

SOM BUILDING SALE UPDATES
Over the next 7 to 10 days there will be structural engineers in our 407-419 Buildings as part of the normal due diligence procedures when a building is being sold. They will be conducting two different tests and we have tightly coordinated these tests to provide minimal disruption to students, faculty and staff. A lot of work will be done this Saturday.

The inside portion of their work will be done on each floor. They will be cutting small holes in the ceilings and walls to look at the structural beams and building materials. The ceiling holes will be about 10'' by 10'' and will be patched up within a week. The wall holes will be very small. The processes takes about 15 minutes at each stop to complete and they will provide drop clothes, as to not leave any kind of residue.

The second part of their work will be done in the basements of the buildings and the outside of the buildings. They will be testing the structural soundness of the buildings by drilling holes in the walls and floors. This process could be slightly loud. This test has started in 407 and will work back toward the 419 building.

If you have any questions or concerns please call or email Emily Gibbons in Operations at x3844 or Mary D at x3813. Thanks very much!

Noel Levitz Graduate Student Survey
We are writing to invite your participation in the third administration of the Graduate/Adult Student Satisfaction Survey at Simmons. We will begin the administration of this survey the first week of February but we wanted to give you some advance notice. This initiative is part of the College’s Strategic Plan and will provide important feedback for the continual improvement of the graduate student experience at Simmons. Historically, the SOM has had the strongest participation rate of all the graduate schools at Simmons, and we would like to continue this tradition. However, we need your help to do so! We will provide a Dunkin’ Donuts gift check for each student who completes the survey and you also have the option of entering a school-wide raffle. Stay tuned for more information very soon.

Gender in the Headlines: A Moment to Reflect
The recent comments by President Larry Summers of Harvard University have sparked a firestorm about the challenges facing women at the elite Ivy institution. The issues being raised at Harvard are not isolated to higher education; we see many of the same dilemmas being raised in the corporate sector. Fortune’s recent article (How Corporate America is Betraying Women—Jan 10, 2005) suggests that women are facing challenging climates in business too. We invite you to a lunch time seminar where we will break bread together and engage in healthy and vigorous dialogue. Consider the following questions (and bring your own—we are not limited to these questions):
1) Were Larry Summers’ comments inflammatory or were they taken out of context?
2) What would your response have been if you were sitting in the audience?
3) How do we see the issues around the treatment of women that were raised at Harvard represented in larger societal interactions?
4) What do you think of the remedies that Summers has offered to address inequities women face at Harvard?
5) What should organizations be doing to address these issues?

EXTERNAL EVENTS:

From the Career Services Office:
Forum USA
For those interested in working internationally:
The Office for Science and Technology at the Embassy of France in the United States holds the yearly "Forum USA". This event provides an opportunity to bring together students and French companies. Over the years, this event has evolved into the most significant recruitment forum of its kind in North America.

The Forum lasts one week. In the course of Forum USA 2004, 1100 recent university graduates met with representatives from 40 French companies, associations and research institutes. Thanks to the Forum USA, recruiters issued more than 150 jobs and internship offers and selected more than 325 candidates for second-round interviews.

Forum USA is originally focused on students specialized in engineering and hard sciences - cf. the statistics regarding the candidates who attended Forum USA 2004. As we did last year we have widened our focus to include candidates having an MBA to better respond to recruiters' needs. Similarly, newly arrived non-French candidates will likely comprise 25-35% of forum attendants.

Forum USA 2005 will be held consecutively in Boston (April 2, 3 &4) and San Francisco (April 6 & 7). The Forum USA will make candidates' resumes available to the exhibitors and will schedule interviews for them.

Candidates can register for the event through our website at www.forumusa.org until February 15th 2005. Note that Forum USA offers a free night in the hotel the night before the event for the first 100 registrants for Boston and the first 60 registrants for San Francisco (candidates must live at least 60 miles from the Forum to be eligible).
