General Information

Noel Levitz Survey
The Graduate/Adult Student Satisfaction Survey has been placed in your student mailbox. Historically, the SOM has had the strongest participation rate of all the graduate schools at Simmons, and we would like to continue this tradition. However, we need your help to do so! We will provide a Dunkin’ Donuts gift check for each student who completes the survey and you also have the option of entering a school-wide raffle. As an incentive for completing the survey, we will provide lunch for the day students on Tuesday and Thursday and dinner every night due to the varying tracks for evening students. Please hand in your survey by Friday February 11th. Thanks in advance for your support!

NOTE FROM MARY D
As we head into midterms and the Super Bowl, see if you like these quotes!! "You've got to get to the stage in life where going for it is more important than winning or losing," Arthur Ashe, and "In essence, if we want to direct our lives, we must take control of our consistent actions. It's not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives, but what we do consistently." Anthony Robbins

OPERATIONS UPDATE
We are hoping to cut the windows in the caseroom doors in the next two weeks. The windows have arrived!

Announcing the publication of CGO Insights #20!
Authored by Deborah Merrill-Sands, Jill Kickul, and Cynthia Ingols, the article, entitled "Women Pursuing Leadership and Power: Challenging the Myth of the 'Opt Out Revolution,'" addresses the dubious argument currently making rounds in the media that we're seeing fewer women in leadership positions nowadays because qualified women are "opting out." The authors base their challenge on the results of two surveys—one on women's attitudes toward leadership and the other on women's attitudes toward power—administered by Simmons SOM in partnership with Hewlett Packard at the 2003 and 2004 Women's Leadership Conferences.

As with all of our CGO Insights briefing notes, it is available as a free pdf download on the Briefing Notes page of our website, http://www.simmons.edu/som/cgo/publications_resources/briefing_notes.html. A copy of the article has been placed in your mailbox.

MBA Certificate in Entrepreneurship
In response to the increased interest in entrepreneurial enterprises, Simmons School of Management is now offering the MBA Certificate in Entrepreneurship as an exciting enhancement to the Simmons MBA.

REGISTRATION-CAREER STRATEGIES DAY SECTION UPDATE
A few students have asked if they can still register for Career Strategies A , the day section. The answer is yes!! Dates are Monday, 2/28, 9-4pm, Thursday, 3/3 from 9am-4pm, Friday, 3/4 from 1-4pm. Please call (521-3832) or email Paula (paula.donaldson@simmons.edu) in the MBA office if you still want to register.

SUMMER REGISTRATION UPDATES
We have added a section of Identifying New Business Opportunities, Pathways to New Ventures that will be a combination of Thursday nights and Saturdays to the summer schedule.

Entrepreneurship will move from a day section to a Thursday night and Saturday schedule behind the Identifying New Business Opportunities course. This course will now follow the new section of Identifying New Business Opportunities section just added above. We are looking to replace that elective in the day program.

SOM BUILDING SALE UPDATES
Over the next 7 to 10 days there will be structural engineers in our 407-419 Buildings as part of the normal due diligence procedures when a building is being sold. They will be conducting two different tests and we have tightly coordinated these tests to provide minimal disruption to students, faculty and staff. A lot of work will be done this Saturday.

The inside portion of their work will be done on each floor. They will be cutting small holes in the ceilings and walls to look at the structural beams and building materials. The ceiling holes will be about 10'' by 10'' and will be patched up within a week. The wall holes will be very small. The processes takes about 15 minutes at each stop to complete and they will provide drop clothes, as to not leave any kind of residue.

The second part of their work will be done in the basements of the buildings and the outside of the buildings. They will be testing the structural soundness of the buildings by drilling holes in the walls and floors. This process could be slightly loud. This test has started in 407 and will work back toward the 419 building.

If you have any questions or concerns please call or email Emily Gibbons in Operations at x3844 or Mary D at x3813. Thanks very much!

From the Career Services Office:
Forum USA
For those interested in working internationally:
The Office for Science and Technology at the Embassy of France in the United States holds the yearly "Forum USA". This event provides an opportunity to bring together students and French companies. Over the years, this event has evolved into the most significant recruitment forum of its kind in North America.

The Forum lasts one week. In the course of Forum USA 2004, 1100 recent university graduates met with representatives from 40 French companies, associations and research institutes. Thanks to the Forum USA, recruiters issued more than 150 jobs and internship offers and selected more than 325 candidates for second-round interviews.

Forum USA is originally focused on students specialized in engineering and hard sciences - cf. the statistics regarding the candidates who attended Forum USA 2004. As we did last year we have widened our focus to include candidates having an MBA to better respond to recruiters' needs. Similarly, newly arrived non-French candidates will likely comprise 25-35% of forum attendants. Forum USA 2005 will be held consecutively in Boston (April 2, 3 &4) and San Francisco (April 6 & 7). The Forum USA will make candidates' resumes available to the exhibitors and will schedule interviews for them.

Candidates can register for the event through our website at www.forumusa.org until February 15th 2005. Note that Forum USA offers a free night in the hotel the night before the event for the first 100 registrants for Boston and the first 60 registrants for San Francisco (candidates must live at least 60 miles from the Forum to be eligible).

Deborah M. Kolb, the Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor for Women and Leadership, published an article based on her latest book, Her Place at the Table: A Woman’s Guide to Negotiating the Five Key Challenges to Leadership Success, in the January issue of Harvard Business School’s Negotiation Newsletter. The article, written with Linda Putnam, discusses opportunities available to new leaders that aid in negotiating the conditions needed to perform well in a new role.

Jill Kickul presented two papers at the annual United States Association of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) conference in Palm Springs in January. The two papers were titled “An immersion into the dynamic capabilities model of innovation: An empirical test involving e-entrepreneurs” ( presented with Jianwen Liao of Northeastern University) and “E2 opportunities and future strategies: Modeling student preferences using a discrete choice analysis approach” (presented with Rohit Verma of David Eccles Graduate Business School, University of Utah and Gerhard Plaschka of DePaul University).
