NOTE FROM MARY D
Next week is the beginning of the mid semester push. Day students have multiple exams, new January students have their first Economics exam, and returning students have papers and case write-ups, are reviewing for Accounting exams, and a variety of other things due or on the horizon! We are already through the first third of the semester and a vacation of at least a couple of days is right around the corner for all of you. It comes at a great time of the year, and most folks are really looking forward to it! It is a time of the year that pushes your stamina, perseverance and ability to balance and juggle all of the various roles you all juggle. It is the middle of winter as well, and for most of us, spring can’t come fast enough! Please know that the MBA staff are able to help you keep things in perspective as are your faculty, so if you are struggling, please call. You will not be the only one, and we typically find that students feel a lot better and then are able to move forward if they reach out for help!!

Simmons SOM Spring Telethon
Tuesday, March 9, 2004, 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Wednesday, March 10, 2004, 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Simmons College, 300 the Fenway, East Wing, 1st Floor of the Advancement Hall

The Office of Development and Alumnae Relations (ODAR) is seeking volunteers for our Spring Telethon. Our telethons are an important component of achieving our Annual Fund goal, and also provide a great opportunity for students to meet and network with SOM alumnae who also volunteer for the telethon. Your participation is more important than ever during this challenging economy! Note that no experience is necessary – we will train! Please join us to help the SOM reach its goals for 2004. This year's priorities include: Entrepreneurship Initiative, Case Writing, Diversity, and the Center for Gender in Organizations. We provide delicious refreshments, good spirit, and great prizes to our volunteer callers. So check your calendars and contact Corinne Sirianos at 617.521.3825 or corinne.sirianos@simmons.edu to sign up. If you can’t be there in person, but you would still like to help, please drop us a line about the Phone from Home program, which allows you to make calls at your convenience.

SAD NEWS FROM THE DEAN
As some of you know, Margaret Hennig was the co-founder of our School and served with Anne Jardim as its Dean for nearly a quarter of a century. Margaret's doctoral dissertation, written at Harvard Business School, was the foundational work for The Managerial Woman and for the vision that she and Anne had to build the world's first (and only) business school for women. I am sorry to tell you that Margaret passed away this morning, January 28, 2004. Many of us are eternally grateful for Margaret's vision and leadership, and for the difference she made in the lives of thousands of women. Further information about her services can be found in the Boston Globe.

Schedule Changes & Course Information

CLASS NORMS REMINDER
I have been asked to remind students of the following class norms as the semester progresses. In CR2, please avoid going through the pit when a faculty member is teaching. Side conversations should not be occurring; cell phones should be turned off. Classes start on time, which is either 9:15am, 1pm or 6pm. At night, please try and eat your dinner or snack as close to the beginning of class as possible. Please try and be on time as it disruptive for everyone to have a continual stream of students coming in late. We know that occasionally things happen, and the faculty want you in class, but when the numbers of disruptions increase, the frustration level of everyone also rises, and takes away from the teaching and learning in the classroom. Finally, the classroom is a spot that deserves respectful behavior when people have different perspectives and opinions on a particular topic. One of our goals is to challenge you to think critically and take a stand on issues. But, tolerance for difference is an important part of our learning experience and we ask that each of you help ensure the best learning possible in each of your courses.

ACCOUNTING HELP SESSION
A help session for Accounting B will be offered on Feb. 18th from 4:45pm-5:45pm in CR2.

PRINTING
Please note that PDF files and other documents that contain graphics or are memory hungry take longer to print than your common Word document. We have also noticed that some PDF's cannot print successfully in WebCT. If you experience this issue, try emailing the PDF file to yourself and then try printing from your webmail account. Also, printing from the color ink-jet printer takes longer than the laser-jet. Please be patient and refrain from sending multiple print jobs of the same document to the printer.

Simmons School of Management - News Items – February 5, 2004

NEWS

CGO Receives Diversity Leadership Award from the Women's Transportation Seminar (WTS)
The Center for Gender in Organizations (CGO) has been selected to be the recipient of the Women's Transportation Seminar's Boston Diversity Leadership Award. The award goes to the person or organization that has exemplified a deep dedication to both leadership and diversity in work, extra curricular activities, and personal interactions. The award will be presented at an Annual Award Dinner in June 2004.

SOM Professor Dr. Deborah Kolb and the Simmons School of Management Executive Education Program continue to receive media attention for the three-day Negotiation Edge workshop. Featured last November in the Wall Street Journal, they have recently appeared in the Chicago Sun-Times, Salt Lake Tribune, and Sun News (Myrtle Beach, SC). The article’s author, Joann S. Lublin, participated in the workshop led by Kolb, and reported on the strategy and goals of the program and its participants.

The Teen Girls on Business Study by the Simmons School of Management and The Committee of 200 (C200) continues to appear in the media nationwide. Recently, the Study was referenced in the Holbrook (AZ) Tribune-News, Intelligencer Journal (Lancaster, PA), and Magic 106.7 FM Boston. Released in October 2002, the ground-breaking Teen Girls on Business study examined the key factors affecting girls' attitudes to their careers and their perceptions of business, and how these attitudes and perceptions differ from those of boys as well as across girls of diverse racial/ethnic groups. Also identified were key sources of influence - media, family, and education - affecting teen girls in their career aspirations.

Stacy Blake-Beard, Ph.D., SOM Professor and Research Faculty at the Center for Gender in Organizations, continues to receive press coverage for her research on the growing importance of women mentors. Blake-Beard’s study was most recently referenced in the article “Mentors, employees team up for success in the workplace” appearing in the Lincoln (NE) Journal-Star. According to Blake-Beard’s study, the number of women receiving mentoring assistance from other women is rising, and this “may signal that more women are in positions where they may act as mentors.”
