General Information

Noel Levitz Survey
We're off to a great start! 27% of the surveys have been returned. For those students who haven't had a chance to focus on it as yet, we still need your help. We know this has been a busy week, but please take 15-20 minutes to complete the survey. Delicious food will be provided for day and evening students on Thursday as an additional incentive. Thanks in advance for your support!!

INCOMPLETES
Please remember that February 15, 2005 is the last day to turn in or complete any outstanding deliverables for any students that received an incomplete for Fall 2004. It is the student's responsibility to contact the faculty member and deliver or schedule the outstanding work on or before February 15th. Any incomplete that is not resolved by February 15 will be converted into a grade of F. A withdrawal from a course once an incomplete has been issued is not an option. Please contact Mary D or Suzzette with any further questions.

Research Assistant Position Available Immediately
Seeking Graduate Student Assistant to work 10-20 hours per week. Excellent research, writing and computer skills required. Research is related to current corporate scandals. Please contact Bruce Warren at 508.877.0868 for additional information and/or to apply for the position.

NOTE FROM MARY D
As we depart from football season and a successful Super Bowl victory for the Patriots, I promised I would see if I could tie it to your MBA program. I will have a quote for you down below, but the best parallel that came to mind was from a very popular book in the business press. Many of you are familiar with the book Good to Great, by Jim Collins. His research was trying to see if there were any patterns that differentiated good from great companies. Many people who love sports refer to the Patriots organization as the premier organization in football. Collins offers 7 conclusions in his book which include: (1) a series of CEOs (promoted from within) who combined "personal humility and professional will" focused on making a great company; (2) an initial focus on eliminating weak people, adding top performing ones, and establishing a culture of top talent putting out extraordinary effort; (3) then shifting attention to staring at and thinking unceasingly about the hardest facts about the company's situation; (4) using facts to develop a simple concept that is iteratively reconsidered to focus action on improving performance; (5) establishing and maintaining a corporate culture of discipline built around commitments, with freedom about how to meet those promises; (6) using technology to accelerate progress when it fits the company's concept of what it wants to become; and (7) the company builds momentum from consistent efforts behind its concept that are reinforced by success. I think the business parallels to the Patriots organization are enormous here, and I encourage you to read this book if you haven't read it as part of your coursework!

But, here are my quotes this week!
For the Patriots who won: "Have great hopes and dare to go all out for them, have great dreams and dare to live them, have tremendous expectations and believe in them" ---Norman Vincent Peale
And for the Eagles who lost: "In order for there to be ups, there must be downs. Remember all your failures, so when you succeed you can look back and have pride that you had strength enough to overcome." ---Unknown

OPERATIONS UPDATE
We are hoping to cut the windows in the caseroom doors in the next two weeks. The windows have arrived!

Announcing the publication of CGO Insights #20!
Authored by Deborah Merrill-Sands, Jill Kickul, and Cynthia Ingols, the article, entitled "Women Pursuing Leadership and Power: Challenging the Myth of the 'Opt Out Revolution,'" addresses the dubious argument currently making rounds in the media that we're seeing fewer women in leadership positions nowadays because qualified women are "opting out." The authors base their challenge on the results of two surveys—one on women's attitudes toward leadership and the other on women's attitudes toward power—administered by Simmons SOM in partnership with Hewlett Packard at the 2003 and 2004 Women's Leadership Conferences.

As with all of our CGO Insights briefing notes, it is available as a free pdf download on the Briefing Notes page of our website, http://www.simmons.edu/som/cgo/publications_resources/briefing_notes.html. A copy of the article has been placed in your mailbox.

Forum USA
For those interested in working internationally:
The Office for Science and Technology at the Embassy of France in the United States holds the yearly "Forum USA". This event provides an opportunity to bring together students and French companies. Over the years, this event has evolved into the most significant recruitment forum of its kind in North America.

The Forum lasts one week. In the course of Forum USA 2004, 1100 recent university graduates met with representatives from 40 French companies, associations and research institutes. Thanks to the Forum USA, recruiters issued more than 150 jobs and internship offers and selected more than 325 candidates for second-round interviews.

Forum USA is originally focused on students specialized in engineering and hard sciences - cf. the statistics regarding the candidates who attended Forum USA 2004. As we did last year we have widened our focus to include candidates having an MBA to better respond to recruiters' needs. Similarly, newly arrived non-French candidates will likely comprise 25-35% of forum attendants.

Forum USA 2005 will be held consecutively in Boston (April 2, 3 &4) and San Francisco (April 6 & 7). The Forum USA will make candidates' resumes available to the exhibitors and will schedule interviews for them.

Candidates can register for the event through our website at www.forumusa.org until February 15th 2005. Note that Forum USA offers a free night in the hotel the night before the event for the first 100 registrants for Boston and the first 60 registrants for San Francisco (candidates must live at least 60 miles from the Forum to be eligible).

SOM in the News

The Simmons School of Management received press coverage in the February 2 edition of USA Today. In the article “Hip, Happy Housewives,” the author points to the results of the 2004 Simmons School of Management/HP Survey conducted at the SOM’s annual Leadership Conference, which indicate that a majority of women are still interested in and working toward leadership positions. The author also cites results from the 2003 SOM/The Committee of 200 Teen Girls on Business Survey that found 86% of teen girls surveyed would return to work after having children.

Jill Kickul and Deborah Merrill-Sands presented the latest CGO Insights research at the National Council for Research on Women, Corporate Circle Meeting, Tuesday, Feb 1 in New York City. They participated on a panel, “Opting Out: Myth, Viable Option, or Media Spin?” and discussed the findings from the 2003 and 2004 SOM/HP Leadership Conference surveys that challenge the premises that 1) women do not seek leadership and power in their organizations; and 2) women with children, in particular, are less motivated to pursue leadership and power than women without children. For a full review, see CGO Insight #20, authored by Deborah Merrill-Sands, Jill Kickul, and Cynthia Ingols, entitled “Women Pursuing Leadership and Power: Challenging the Myth of the ‘Opt Out Revolution.’”
