General Information

MBA OFFICE STAFFING AND HOURS FOR FEBRUARY 21-25
The MBA office will be closed on February 21 for the Presidents Day holiday. Mary D will be on vacation next week as will Chris Martin in the MBA office. Paula and Suzzette will both be around. There are no classes in the day program all week, and no night classes Monday and Tuesday.

FINANCE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP
The Daniel B. Goldberg Scholarship is available for award to a graduate student who is enrolled full time in a master's level study preparing for a career in state and local government finance. It is a $10,000 award, and more information is available in the MBA office. The deadline for applications is March 18, 2005. You must be a US or Canadian citizen to apply.

NOTE FROM MARY D
This is the time of the semester where I know folks really need a couple of days off! Stress levels are high in many tracks, deliverables are due, the new Jamit class is awaiting their first Econ exam back, spring has peeked through but gone away again, and some folks feel like they are running out of steam, so here are my quotes for this week. The takeaways for me in these quotes are that you need to stay optimistic, stay focused, but acknowledge the signs when you need to recharge your batteries and reload your energy, which is why we have built in a few days off in the middle of the semester!! " Do something fun, read a book, go to the movie, go out to dinner, have coffee with your friends, because you will need the energy for the second half of the semester! "We grow great by dreams ... Some of us let these great dreams die, but others nourish and protect them; nurse them through bad days till they [flourish]; bring them to the sunshine and light, which comes always to those who sincerely hope that their dreams will come true. "--Woodrow Wilson Here is a quote from Tom Reilly in an article on dealing with tough times- "You fight this battle on two fronts. One, you fight it on the streets with your knowledge and skills. Two, you fight it in your mind—your thinking and your attitude. Attitude drives behavior. We move in the direction of our thoughts. We behave as we believe. What we feel on the inside we generally demonstrate on the outside. You may not be able to control your environment totally but you can control your reaction. You may not be able to control the outcome of your efforts but you can control your input. You may not be able to silence the cynics and the critics but you can prove them wrong with your attitude and behavior."

CHANGE IN INCOMPLETE POLICY EFFECTIVE WITH SUMMER TERM, 2005
The curriculum committee has approved a change to the incomplete policy that will become effective with the summer term, 2005. We have bolded the change.
1. Incompletes
Incompletes are given only where exceptional extenuating circumstances beyond a student’s control occur. If a faculty member does assign an Incomplete, the student must complete all the required work for the semester by the following deadlines:

If the course for which an Incomplete is being granted is a pre-requisite for a course in which the student is registered in the following semester, the student must complete all outstanding work for the Incomplete by the end of the first week of classes in the following semester. All work must be delivered to the MBA office. If the student is going on a Leave of Absence or is not taking a sequential course that requires the course as a pre-requisite, students will have until October 15 for summer semester, February 15 for fall semester, and June 15 for spring semester. If any of these dates fall on a weekend or holiday, the due date for completing required work will be the first business day following.

Normally, if work is not completed within this time frame, the grade of Incomplete will be replaced by a grade of Failure. If a student is enrolled in a course for which the incomplete course is a prerequisite, the student may be withdrawn from the current semester course.

MISSING ITEMS REPORTED
We have heard that there was some jewelry left in the Mockler bathroom and it has been reported missing. They were rings, and if anyone has seen them around, please let Operations (Emily, x3844) know!! Thanks!!

SUMMER REGISTRATION INFORMATION
Summer registration information will be emailed to all students as well as posted on Webct on Track Forum on Friday, February 18, and will be posted to the web next week.

Simmons SOM Spring Telethon
Tuesday April 5, 6-9 pm
Thursday April 7, 6-9 pm
Simmons College Advancement Wing, 300 The Fenway, Boston

WILL YOU JOIN US ?!!
We're in search of enthusiastic volunteers who are looking for ways to give back to the SOM while connecting with alumnae. This is also a wonderful networking opportunity for current students--SOM alumnae are a robust and powerful group of women, and this a great way to begin getting to know them (before you become one yourself!) as well as a great opportunity to learn or refine the skill of fundraising.

Please join us as a caller at our upcoming SOM Annual Fund Spring Telethon in April. Your help is more important than ever in reaching out to our alumnae so that we can carry out the SOM's priorities for 2005, which include entrepreneurship, corporate outreach, leadership and accountability, diversity, and advancing the work of the Center for Gender in Organizations. We will provide refreshments, lots of good company and some great prizes. Parking will be available.

No experience is needed - we will train! You will be helping the SOM reach its annual fund goal of $385,000. So check your calendars and call or email Corinne Sirianos in the Office of Development & Alumnae Relations (617.521.3825; somalum@simmons.edu) to sign up.

If you are not available for the telethon or you will not be in the area on these dates, please consider volunteering for our Phone from Home program which allows you to make phone calls at your leisure. We look forward to hearing from you!!

P.S. Please pass this along to fellow students or your friends who you think may be interested in lending support!

Noel Levitz Survey
We're now up to 42%!! A special thank you to those students who have turned in their surveys. For those students who haven't had a chance to focus on it as yet, there is still time. We know this is a busy time of the semester, but please take 15-20 minutes to complete the survey. If you need another survey, please contact Suzzette Turnbull at suzzette.turnbull@simmons.edu or 617.521.3839. Our last push will be the week you return from break. Thanks in advance for your support!!

Marketing Management Survey
We would like to invite you to participate in our survey. The information collected from this survey will be used for a marketing project at Simmons School of Management. All information is confidential. This survey is for women only. There are only 24 questions, it is a quick survey that will only take a moment. We thank you and greatly appreciate all for taking the time to participate.

Forum USA
For those interested in working internationally:
The Office for Science and Technology at the Embassy of France in the United States holds the yearly "Forum USA". This event provides an opportunity to bring together students and French companies. Over the years, this event has evolved into the most significant recruitment forum of its kind in North America.

The Forum lasts one week. In the course of Forum USA 2004, 1100 recent university graduates met with representatives from 40 French companies, associations and research institutes. Thanks to the Forum USA, recruiters issued more than 150 jobs and internship offers and selected more than 325 candidates for second-round interviews.

Forum USA is originally focused on students specialized in engineering and hard sciences - cf. the statistics regarding the candidates who attended Forum USA 2004. As we did last year we have widened our focus to include candidates having an MBA to better respond to recruiters' needs. Similarly, newly arrived non-French candidates will likely comprise 25-35% of forum attendants.

Forum USA 2005 will be held consecutively in Boston (April 2, 3 &4) and San Francisco (April 6 & 7). The Forum USA will make candidates' resumes available to the exhibitors and will schedule interviews for them.

Candidates can register for the event through our website at www.forumusa.org until February 15th 2005. Note that Forum USA offers a free night in the hotel the night before the event for the first 100 registrants for Boston and the first 60 registrants for San Francisco (candidates must live at least 60 miles from the Forum to be eligible).

SOM in the News

The Simmons School of Management was a source of information on the challenges facing women executives as HP CEO Carly Fiorina announced her resignation. Acting Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands contributed comments to the February 10th editions of both Newsday and Boston Herald, stating that what happened to Fiorina happens to many CEOs in the field, but the visibility of women CEOs and their work is heightened because there are so few in their ranks.

SOM Professor Stacy Blake-Beard was quoted in the January issue of Workforce Management in the article “Lessons from the Donald.” Blake-Beard says The Apprentice’s message is to look out for yourself above all else, and that, in reality, organizations promote the star.

Mary Finlay SOM ’90, deputy chief information officer at Partners HealthCare System, received one of 10 New England Business and Technology Association awards. The NEBATA awards program recognizes New England business and technology leaders who have made a significant impact in developing or deploying technologies that address critical business issues while contributing to the region’s prosperity.

Ann Fudge, Chairman & CEO of Young and Rubicam Brands and former SOM Executive in Residence, was featured in the February issue of Black Enterprise magazine as one of the 75 most powerful African Americans in Corporate America.

Simmons College Alumna in the News
Alicia Canady who graduated from the UG program in 2003 with a degree in Marketing, has been working with other young Black professional women to start a new organization: The Young Black Women's Society (YBWS). They have just launched a brief web presence: http://www.ybws.org/
