General Information

REGISTRATION DEADLINES AND UPDATES
Registration will close at 9am on March 15. Please register for classes as many factors depend on registration numbers, particularly electives. Two electives are in danger of not running as of today-Employment Law and Non Profit Management. Public Speaking is the one course with waiting lists. We may have to bump non graduating students to accommodate students who are graduating and registered within the time registration is open. If we have bump any non graduating students, we will guarantee you into another section next year.

NEW COURSE OFFERING
Please watch your email today for an advanced IADM being offered as an independent study by Deborah Marlino for students that loved the course. This class will be done virtually except for one Saturday in June as a wrap up class. 2 credits and it will need 15 or more students in it to run. Deadline to email Paula in the MBA office is Tuesday, March 16 at noon.

Leadership Conference Volunteers
There is a new time for the mandatory meeting on Tuesday, April 27th. The meeting will now be held from 3-5pm in the World Trade Center.

CHANGE IN NAP ROOM LOCATION
The nap room for students has been changed from bldg 407, room 42 to bldg 411, room 43 as of March 15.

OPERATIONS UPDATE
We are having trouble connecting with the Coke vendors to refill and repair the vending machines at the SOM campus. We are working really hard to resolve this issue.

NOTE FROM MARY D
We are about to enter the last push of spring semester as we are officially two third’s of the way through the term. Spring is coming officially in two weeks!! Many folks have just received midterms back in econ, accounting and finance and the reactions will range from thrilled to very disappointed. Please meet with your faculty member if you didn’t do as well as you hoped. Together you can devise a strategy for the next part of the semester.

*Public Speaking A (day section) has closed.
*Sylvia has agreed for any student wishing to take Operations and BGGE on Wednesday night that the students can go to the Tuesday night section on the conflict nights. Paula in our office will need to do an override for you to allow you into the system.

Computer Lab

NEW SOFTWARE
We now have a multimedia production computer in the lab. Computer #12 in the lab (the one with the scanner) now has the following software installed on it: Macromedia Dreamweaver and the Adobe Creative Suite which includes the following programs: Photoshop, ImageReady, Illustrator, InDesign, GoLive and Acrobat Pro. Now you can scan and edit your images as well as build a website. If you have questions about this software please contact Bill Porter of the Technology staff.

Reminder: Food, drinks or cell phones are NOT allowed in the computer lab or study rooms, sorry. This rules will be enforced by lab staff.

Access to personal network folders in Windows XP
A Handout is available in the computer lab. It explains how to use a personal login to access your own network 100MB folder. It's a more secure alternative to saving files to the Student Data drive. Please be sure to restart lab computers after you use your personal login. Feel free to approach lab staff with questions about how this works.

If you experience any problems with the computers please record it in the Problems Notation Log located in each study room or tell the lab staff.

Monday - Saturday 7am-11pm
Sunday 7am-7pm

SOM Lab (staffed) Hours:
Monday - Thursday 4pm-7:30pm
Friday 2 - 5pm
Sat. & Sun 12 - 4pm

PRINTING
Please note that PDF files and other documents that contain graphics or are memory hungry take longer to print than your common Word document. We have also noticed that some PDF's cannot print successfully in WebCT. If you experience this issue, try emailing the PDF file to yourself and then try printing from your webmail account. Also, printing from the color ink-jet printer takes longer than the laser-jet. Please be patient and refrain from sending multiple print jobs of the same document to the printer.

SOM in the News

Gail Deegan, SOM ’78 and Executive-in-Residence, appeared in the February 25 Boston Globe article “Key to boardroom remains elusive.” In the article discussing women’s underrepresentation on Massachusetts and U.S. boards, Deegan says that once women are named to one or two boards, other board appointments follow. Deegan spoke as part of a panel of prominent female board members at the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce’s Women’s Network Breakfast on February 24.

The Names column of the February 7 Boston Globe prominently featured the lineup for the 25th Annual Simmons School of Management Women’s Leadership Conference. Held May 1, this year’s event features Whoopi Goldberg, Jane Fonda, Carly Fiorina, Mariane Pearl, and others.

Joan Cirillo SOM ’93 appears as a regular columnist in the Boston Sunday Globe’s business section. Cirillo’s column addresses readers’ career management and workplace questions. Cirillo is the Executive Director of Operation A.B.L.E. of Greater Boston.

Miranda Mancusi SOM ’06 wrote an article for the View from the Cube section of the February 22nd Boston Globe business section. Entitled “For maximum efficiency, call on a mother,” Mancusi pitches the hiring of mothers, the experts in time management and multitasking.

Gail Snowden SOM ’78 has been awarded the Arnold Z. Rosoff Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement by The Ad Club. The awards were created in 1996 to promote greater diversity in Boston advertising and business with the goal of recognizing, rewarding, and stimulating diversity initiatives that have a positive economic and social impact on an organization or community. Snowden is the Executive Vice President/Managing Director of the Fleet Community Investment Group.
