General Information

NOTE FROM MARY D
Spring finally will be here in the next few days, so here is my quote for the week with a tie to your MBA program! You will need one more big push to get you through the end of the semester. "If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste of adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome" -Anne Bradstreet. You have a few weeks left of the semester and will need one final push to get you through. Just remember to take care of yourself and other important priorities in your life as it will help keep you sane!!

Noel Levitz Survey
We're proud to report that we achieved a participation rate of 55%. A heartfelt thank you to all the students who completed their survey. If you haven't picked up your Dunkin' Donut gift check, please stop by the MBA Office.

Congressional Fellowships on Women & Public Policy
The WREI Fellowships are designed to train potential leaders in public policy formation to examine issues from the perspective, experiences, and needs of women. Administered by WREI, a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization located in Washington, DC, this program is unique - the only Congressional fellowship program directly by, for, and about women.

Students who are currently enrolled in a master's or doctoral program at an accredited institution in the U.S. or who have completed such a program within the past 18 months are eligible. Fellows are selected on the basis of academic competence as well as demonstrated interest in the public policy process. A WREI Fellow receives a stipend of $1,300 per month for eight months (January - August). An additional sum of $500 is provided for the purchase of health insurance. WREI will also reimburse up to $1,500 ($750 per semester) for the cost of three hours tuition at a Fellow's home institution. The application deadline is May 20, 2005.

For more information, visit http://www.wrei.org/fellowships/index.htm and/or stop by the MBA Office.

REMINDER ABOUT CLASSROOM NORMS
It tends to be a good time of the year to remind folks of the standard SOM norms in the classroom. Faculty may have additional norms, but students often get comfortable with each other and the classroom and forget that some of their actions are not conducive to a good teaching and learning environment.

* Try and eat at the beginning of class and avoid crumpling up the trash while the professor is trying to speak
* Keeping hands up in the air while other students are speaking or trying to make a point. Some faculty would say that it is difficult to actively listen to the conversation if you have your hand up preparing to make your point
* Cellphones-please shut them off or put them on the silent option. We know that many folks need to keep them on, but it is very distracting when they go off.
* Crossing the pit while Professor is speaking or standing mid-pit. This can totally throw a faculty member off and distract their teaching plan. If you are in CR1, wait til they go to the board or ask the faculty how they would like students to enter and exit the room. * Coming back late (and loud) from break. Please try and respect the time the faculty member has given you for your break and return on time.
* Chit-chat/side talk during class. It hurts the learning of students around you and is very distracting to all.

Leadership Conference
Thank you to all the volunteers who have committed themselves to this year's conference. All volunteers were contacted via email this week. If you should have been contacted and were not, please email Ali Corvino at acorvino@trane.com.

Bittersweet News from the MBA Office
As you may already know, Christina Noe Martin has resigned from her position as MBA Coordinator. Her last day will be March 18th. Chris has decided to focus on school and home until she graduates next year from the MBA Program. This news, of course, is bittersweet news for us. We support Chris completely in her decision because if know Chris like we do, you can guarantee it's a well-thought out and researched decision!! But, we will be very sorry to lose her as a member of our MBA team. We will miss Chris dearly because she has added tremendous value to the MBA Office and always has great stories to tell. She has provided excellent customer service to our students and faculty, demonstrated great problem-solving skills, overhauled a bookstore process that was a mess, improved our Foundations program, chaired our internal MBA AACSB task force to make sure we met our deadline for developing a policies and procedures manual, and put important processes in place for increased efficiency in the MBA Office. Chris has a wonderful ability to think through an issue and look at it from multiple perspectives. Her attention to detail is one of the strongest skill sets we have ever worked with and she could find the holes in anything!! The end result was that we have a much stronger MBA program office as a result of all of her efforts. Most of all, Chris has been a great team player and a pleasure to work with. Fortunately, she will still be around since she is a student, and we have forewarned her that we will still utilize her knowledge whenever we see her. There is no escaping us!!! Suz and Mary

Recently, media attention has raised the issue of the "opt-out" revolution, a term coined to describe the alarming talent drain of highly trained women in the work force. New research released challenges this notion of career choices and provides alternate explanations for women taking the "off-ramp" and "on-ramp," in attempts to redefine how to keep talented women on the road to success.

SOM Professors Cynthia Ingols, Mary Shapiro and current SOM student Janna Schwartz are asking the next question: "How does diversity affect these alternate career paths and definitions? Do women of color perceive the same challenges and weigh the same trade-offs as other women?" Research to date has essentially treated all women as a homogeneous population. Help us break down these stereotypes and shape a new survey to examine a more nuanced explanation for the "opt-out" revolution.

"Living" Case Study - Stacy Madison of Stacy's Pita Chips
Monday, March 28, 2005
6:30-9:00 p.m.
409 Commonwealth Ave, Boston

The third in a series of "Living" case studies features , Stacy Madison from Stacy's Pita Chips (recently profiled in Women's Boston Business). Just eight years ago, Stacy Madison were cutting pitas by hand and baking them in a small rotating oven. Today, she is presiding over a $30 million pita chip empire that is moving for a third time into bigger space--consequences of the national/international growth of her business! This case has many similar but contrasting start-up and growth issues and challenges as seen with our previous live cases (Allison Nevitt of Circles and Paige Arnof-Fenn of Mavens & Moguls).

EXTERNAL EVENTS:

From the Career Services Office:
Forum USA
For those interested in working internationally: The Office for Science and Technology at the Embassy of France in the United States holds the yearly "Forum USA". This event provides an opportunity to bring together students and French companies. Over the years, this event has evolved into the most significant recruitment forum of its kind in North America.

The Forum lasts one week. In the course of Forum USA 2004, 1100 recent university graduates met with representatives from 40 French companies, associations and research institutes. Thanks to the Forum USA, recruiters issued more than 150 jobs and internship offers and selected more than 325 candidates for second-round interviews.

Forum USA is originally focused on students specialized in engineering and hard sciences - cf. the statistics regarding the candidates who attended Forum USA 2004. As we did last year we have widened our focus to include candidates having an MBA to better respond to recruiters' needs. Similarly, newly arrived non-French candidates will likely comprise 25-35% of forum attendants.

Forum USA 2005 will be held consecutively in Boston (April 2, 3 &4) and San Francisco (April 6 & 7). The Forum USA will make candidates' resumes available to the exhibitors and will schedule interviews for them.

Note that Forum USA offers a free night in the hotel the night before the event for the first 100 registrants for Boston and the first 60 registrants for San Francisco (candidates must live at least 60 miles from the Forum to be eligible).

SOM in the News

The Simmons School of Management was a source of information on the challenges facing women executives as HP CEO Carly Fiorina announced her resignation. Acting Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands contributed comments to the February 10th editions of both Newsday and Boston Herald, stating that what happened to Fiorina happens to many CEOs in the field, but the visibility of women CEOs and their work is heightened because there are so few in their ranks.

SOM Professor Stacy Blake-Beard was quoted in the January issue of Workforce Management in the article “Lessons from the Donald.” Blake-Beard says The Apprentice’s message is to look out for yourself above all else, and that, in reality, organizations promote the star.

Mary Finlay SOM ’90, deputy chief information officer at Partners HealthCare System, received one of 10 New England Business and Technology Association awards. The NEBATA awards program recognizes New England business and technology leaders who have made a significant impact in developing or deploying technologies that address critical business issues while contributing to the region’s prosperity.

Ann Fudge, Chairman & CEO of Young and Rubicam Brands and former SOM Executive in Residence, was featured in the February issue of Black Enterprise magazine as one of the 75 most powerful African Americans in Corporate America.

Simmons College Alumna in the News
Alicia Canady who graduated from the UG program in 2003 with a degree in Marketing, has been working with other young Black professional women to start a new organization: The Young Black Women's Society (YBWS). They have just launched a brief web presence: http://www.ybws.org/
