General Information

ELECTRICAL SHUTDOWN AT THE MAIN CAMPUS-SATURDAY 3/27
The main campus will be shutting down electrical systems from 8pm to midnight on Saturday, 3/27. It is expected that Technology services College wide, such as the connection to the Internet, e-mail, Webmail, Webct, and web servers will remain available on emergency power and that any outage of these services will be temporary. Other than that possibility, there should be no impact on the SOM.

SPRING GRADES DUE DATE FOR FACULTY
Faculty will have through April 24 to submit their spring '04 grades on SOAR. SOAR will show any grade posted as it occurs. It does not wait for all grades to be submitted.

SUMMER REGISTRATION UPDATES
All students working on independent study proposals with faculty need to have the faculty member sign a project proposal form and bring a copy to the MBA office before we will register you for summer term. The IADM independent study elective with Deb Marlino is the only independent study that does not need this approval from the faculty.

NOTE FROM MARY D-HONOR CODE ISSUES
Faculty and/or students have reported to me two separate honor code violations in the last two weeks. One related to students working on an exam together and the other involved sharing exam questions with sections of students still to take the exam. This is very disappointing to me as we strive to have a community based on integrity, hard work and honesty. 99% of the students in this program are honest, hardworking women who will be stunned to hear that this has happened. Ideally we want the students who chose to violate the honor code to come forward and admit they made a mistake. Unfortunately that seldom happens, forcing the faculty to protect all other students and take measures to assure fairness and integrity regarding deliverables that are supposed to be individual work. As a result, the faculty will most likely consider how to tighten the parameters of flexibility for students around deliverables and exams, and this is really unfortunate.

As we head into exams and the last month of the semester, I will remind students of SOM Graduate Honor Code.

“The relationship between instructors and students requires cooperation and trust in maintaining the ideals and spirit of an honor code. Academic and community violations will be referred to the Simmons College Honor Board.

The following are the major academic violations of the honor code:

CHEATING: This includes copying others’ work, collaborating without authorization, using cribnotes or other unauthorized source materials during examinations, accessing and using others’ computer files without authorization, and violations of the specific regulations of the instructor.

PLAGIARIZING: This is defined as intentionally or unintentionally using someone else’s work, works, thoughts, or ideas without giving proper credit. When a source is not cited, it is assumed that the works, work, thoughts, or ideas are the sole product of the author, i.e., the student. Plagiarizing includes handing in as one’s own work a paper on which a student has received extensive aid with substance and/or structure without acknowledging that help, as well as using one paper for more than one course without authorization to do so. Material used from outside readings, reference, or the like, must be noted by using footnotes, endnotes, or whatever notation devices are appropriate for the field of study. Direct quotations must be differentiated from the text by using quotation marks or using single-space indentation. Integrity and honesty in the performance of all assignments and examinations both in the classroom and outside are essential. A student who cheats or submits work which is not her own violates the principle of high standards and jeopardizes her right to continue in the Simmons MBA Program.”

In your group interactions, can you recall a moment where the group felt collective discomfort and did not know how to move on? When all conversation stopped, or everyone suddenly began talking at once? This is called a problematic moment, and it occurs in groups when an uncomfortable theme that members are collectively avoiding is raised. In this one-day workshop we will explore the idea of a problematic moment in order to identify the difficult questions that need to be asked when building coalitions between affinity groups and managing differences in work teams. For details or to register, contact CGO at cgo@simmons.edu or visit http://www.simmons.edu/som/email/cgo/problem.html.

Bill Porter is also available for assistance Monday - Friday 9am - 4:30pm If the lab is not staffed and you need assistance call the Main Campus Lab @ x2769

PRINTING
Please note that PDF files and other documents that contain graphics or are memory hungry take longer to print than your common Word document. We have also noticed that some PDF's cannot print successfully in WebCT. If you experience this issue, try emailing the PDF file to yourself and then try printing from your webmail account. Also, printing from the color ink-jet printer takes longer than the laser-jet. Please be patient and refrain from sending multiple print jobs of the same document to the printer.
