General Information

NOTE FROM MARY D
Two weeks to go!! QA is done, BGGE presentations are done in the day program, Leading presentations are tonight in the night program and Marketing presentations are the next two Mondays. Granted there are a few big things like Accounting, Finance and Econ finals looming, but as I talk to students this week, you can feel that the end of the semester is within sights now! The end of the semester is stressful, but keep it in perspective, study hard, use your faculty and our office if you need help . Here is my quote for this week-and it is even better because it is from a current student!! Being a golfer, I love any golf analogies, so I am rather fond of this one!!

"When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar...and the coffee...A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous "yes." The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed."Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life." The golf balls are the important things- your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions- things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your education, your house, and your car. The sand is everything else-the small stuff. "If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children.Take time to get medical checkups.Take your partner out to dinner. Play another 18.

Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand. One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend." Unknown

Study Rooms
From 9:00am-5:00pm during the first week of the summer semester, 4/25 - 4/29, the study rooms, computer lab, and laptop room in 419 will not be available due to the day section of Strategic Decision Making. If you need a study room during that time, please contact Karen Morrissey (617.521.3821, karen.morrissey@simmons.edu) to make other arrangements

MBA OFFICE HOURS DURING THE BREAK
The MBA office will be open 8:30-4:30 during the semester break. We will be closed for Patriots day on April 18. Mary D will be on vacation, but Suzzette and Paula will be here.

MBA OFFICE NEWS
We are thrilled to announce that Carolyn Bogle has accepted our offer to be the new MBA Coordinator of Course Support. Carolyn has been a student assistant in our office for the past two years and will be done with her major UG coursework this spring. She will start on May 16 and will fill the evening shift.

OPERATIONS STAFF NEWS
We are equally as excited to announce that Kim O'Neil has joined the Operations staff as their new coordinator. Kim was working in the Undergraduate Management department and has a ton of operations and event experience. On a sadder note, Donna MacLearn, who has been our front desk receptionist for over a year, has made the decision that she would like to pursue some different opportunities and will be leaving next week. As you know, the front desk is the first contact that students, staff and guests have with the SOM and we are a very busy school! It is also one of our toughest positions because you are constantly working in a public fishbowl! We appreciate all of Donna's efforts and contributions to making everyone feel welcome at our school and we wish her well as she embarks on the next chapter of her career!

From the Career Services Office:
Forum USA
For those interested in working internationally: The Office for Science and Technology at the Embassy of France in the United States holds the yearly "Forum USA". This event provides an opportunity to bring together students and French companies. Over the years, this event has evolved into the most significant recruitment forum of its kind in North America.

The Forum lasts one week. In the course of Forum USA 2004, 1100 recent university graduates met with representatives from 40 French companies, associations and research institutes. Thanks to the Forum USA, recruiters issued more than 150 jobs and internship offers and selected more than 325 candidates for second-round interviews.

Forum USA is originally focused on students specialized in engineering and hard sciences - cf. the statistics regarding the candidates who attended Forum USA 2004. As we did last year we have widened our focus to include candidates having an MBA to better respond to recruiters' needs. Similarly, newly arrived non-French candidates will likely comprise 25-35% of forum attendants.

Forum USA 2005 will be held consecutively in Boston (April 2, 3 &4) and San Francisco (April 6 & 7). The Forum USA will make candidates' resumes available to the exhibitors and will schedule interviews for them.

Note that Forum USA offers a free night in the hotel the night before the event for the first 100 registrants for Boston and the first 60 registrants for San Francisco (candidates must live at least 60 miles from the Forum to be eligible).

SOM in the News

The Simmons School of Management was a source of information on the challenges facing women executives as HP CEO Carly Fiorina announced her resignation. Acting Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands contributed comments to the February 10th editions of both Newsday and Boston Herald, stating that what happened to Fiorina happens to many CEOs in the field, but the visibility of women CEOs and their work is heightened because there are so few in their ranks.

SOM Professor Stacy Blake-Beard was quoted in the January issue of Workforce Management in the article “Lessons from the Donald.” Blake-Beard says The Apprentice’s message is to look out for yourself above all else, and that, in reality, organizations promote the star.

Mary Finlay SOM ’90, deputy chief information officer at Partners HealthCare System, received one of 10 New England Business and Technology Association awards. The NEBATA awards program recognizes New England business and technology leaders who have made a significant impact in developing or deploying technologies that address critical business issues while contributing to the region’s prosperity.

Ann Fudge, Chairman & CEO of Young and Rubicam Brands and former SOM Executive in Residence, was featured in the February issue of Black Enterprise magazine as one of the 75 most powerful African Americans in Corporate America.

Simmons College Alumna in the News
