General Information

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
The smiles are finally returning to all your faces as we enter the last week of the semester!! Good luck with your final push of studying or writing those final papers! "Those who truly have the spirit of champions are never wholly happy with an easy win. Half the satisfaction stems from knowing that it was the time and the effort you invested that led to your high achievement."
---Nicole Haislett

FINALS AND CLASS NORMS
Most of you are counting the days until next Friday, and checking off your big deliverables as they occur or you hand them in. But, many students still have finals and papers due, so I would ask students who have finished to be respectful of the fact that not everyone is done and students need to be able to find quiet spaces and study rooms to complete their work. Please also remember that when exams are occuring in Mockler, the joy of finishing can often be heard within the classroom by those not yet done. If you could remember to celebrate outside the building, your classmates would appreciate it!!

GRADUATION UPDATES
The initial graduation list will be posted in Mockler on Thursday, April 7. If you are not on that list, or are on the list and shouldn't be, please contact Paula ASAP. If you are not on the list, do not panic!!

We have done our first round of transcript checks for graduating students. If there is a problem, Paula will be contacting you. This first check is to insure you have the correct number of credits to graduate in August.

Graduation invitations will be available Monday, April 11 in the MBA office. Students can pick up a maximum of 10 invitations at this time. More will likely be available later! Please remember, it is unlimited seating at the John Hancock Hall, so invite all your friends and family!!

Our graduation speaker this year will be Paula Sneed, Senior Vice President, Global Marketing Resources and Initiatives, Kraft Foods. A complete bio is coming soon.

The Dean's Reception this year will be at the Copley Fairmont and graduation will be held at the John Hancock Hall. Both locations are downtown.

A WebCT site for graduation will be set up at the beginning of the summer term.

The class gift committee has sent an email to all graduating students and are looking for students to help them. Please read the email!!

Leadership Conference Volunteers
The day is almost here! Conference assignments were emailed this week. If you didn't receive yours, please email Ali Corvino at AHCorvino@comcast.net. Thank you for volunteering. It's going to be another awesome conference because of your help.

Bookstore
You are now able to purchase your course material online at www.bkstore.com/simmons. Also the bookstore will be opening at 419 Comm Ave on Monday, a schedule was placed in your mailbox.

QA Book Information
Students have been having trouble ordering the textbook package online for GSM 415 Quantitative Analysis. If you are having trouble locating this course material, please refer to the publisher's website (www.prenhall.com) and search under the given ISBN number (0-13-1041517) from the online course material list. This will allow you to see what this pack includes, and may make it easier to locate through other online channels.

REGISTRATION UPDATES
We have 1 slot that has opened in Public Speaking B and no longer have any waiting lists! Contact Paula ASAP if you are interested!

INTERIM CLASS RANKINGS
Many students have asked the MBA office recently if they can get their class rank at the end of their semester. The answer is that we only do the class rankings at graduation and here is the reason: There are 6 tracks at the SOM and 15 subtracks. Prior to graduation, each subtrack is taking a different number of courses and credits, and it is impossible to do an accurate class ranking relative to your classmates. Graduation is the only point where everyone has completed the same number of credits. However, everyone does have an individual GPA calculation at the end of each semester. Hopefully this makes sense, if not, ask Mary D to explain it better!

Beacon Street Parking
Parking of vehicles within the posted area in front of Beacon Street at 4 Charlesgate East, effective on 4/8/05, will be prohibited due to the issuance of a Construction Permit by the City of Boston, Public Works Department. If you are parked within the posted area during the date and time (4/8/05, 7am-5pm) that this restriction is in effect, you will be ticketed and towed. Note: This information was retrieved from a Boston Transportation Department notice placed on a student's vehicle

Study Rooms
From 9:00am-5:00pm during the first week of the summer semester, 4/25 - 4/29, the study rooms, computer lab, and laptop room in 419 will not be available due to the day section of Strategic Decision Making. If you need a study room during that time, please contact Karen Morrissey (617.521.3821, karen.morrissey@simmons.edu) to make other arrangements

MBA OFFICE HOURS DURING THE BREAK
The MBA office will be open 8:30-4:30 during the semester break. We will be closed for Patriots day on April 18. Mary D will be on vacation, but Suzzette and Paula will be here.

MBA OFFICE NEWS
We are thrilled to announce that Carolyn Bogle has accepted our offer to be the new MBA Coordinator of Course Support. Carolyn has been a student assistant in our office for the past two years and will be done with her major UG coursework this spring. She will start on May 16 and will fill the evening shift.

Bayridge Residence & Cultural Center presents a lecture by: Dr. Lotte Bailyn MIT Professor of Management

Work & Family: Can We Have It all? Men, Women and Success

Lotte Bailyn is the T. Wilson Professor of Management at MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She studies the relationship between managerial practice and employees' lives. Beyond Work-Family Balance: Advancing Gender Equity and Workplace Performance (Jossey-Bass, 2002), of which she is a co-author contends that work and personal life are actually complementary, even synergistic, rather than adversarial. It shows that by challenging the assumptions in which current work practices are embedded, the goals of both business productivity and employees' family and community concerns can be met in ways that are equitable.

SOM in the News

The Simmons School of Management was a source of information on the challenges facing women executives as HP CEO Carly Fiorina announced her resignation. Acting Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands contributed comments to the February 10th editions of both Newsday and Boston Herald, stating that what happened to Fiorina happens to many CEOs in the field, but the visibility of women CEOs and their work is heightened because there are so few in their ranks.

SOM Professor Stacy Blake-Beard was quoted in the January issue of Workforce Management in the article “Lessons from the Donald.” Blake-Beard says The Apprentice’s message is to look out for yourself above all else, and that, in reality, organizations promote the star.

Mary Finlay SOM ’90, deputy chief information officer at Partners HealthCare System, received one of 10 New England Business and Technology Association awards. The NEBATA awards program recognizes New England business and technology leaders who have made a significant impact in developing or deploying technologies that address critical business issues while contributing to the region’s prosperity.

Ann Fudge, Chairman & CEO of Young and Rubicam Brands and former SOM Executive in Residence, was featured in the February issue of Black Enterprise magazine as one of the 75 most powerful African Americans in Corporate America.

Simmons College Alumna in the News
Alicia Canady who graduated from the UG program in 2003 with a degree in Marketing, has been working with other young Black professional women to start a new organization: The Young Black Women's Society (YBWS). They have just launched a brief web presence: http://www.ybws.org/
