General Information

NOTE FROM MARY D
Tonite there is one exam left, and that is the Econ exam. Good luck to all of you!! But at 9:01pm, the semester will be officially over for each and every one of you!! Congratulations! You know the end of the semester is my time for reflection and hopefully you will like today's quote!! "Look at a day when you are supremely satisfied at the end. It's not a day when you lounge around doing nothing; it's when you've had everything to do and you've done it." --Margaret Thatcher

We know everyone is ready for a week off and some nice weather. This winter seemed unusually long for most students, and I spent way too much time on the MBA hotline for weather announcments!! But, everyone does agree that they worked hard, learned a ton of new things, and view the world differently than they did before. For some students it is the end of their first semester. For others, it is the end of their 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th or 10th term at the SOM. This is important because it but is encouraging for folks to realize there are a ton of great role models and support systems in your fellow students and all of them can help you reinforce why you are here and why it will be worth it in the long run!

Many students now have graduation squarely in sight with one semester to go! But for the majority of you, it marks another milestone in your goal of getting your MBA. Each milestone is a major one and one to be celebrated. I encourage you all to reflect on how much you have learned and accomplished. We are very proud of all of your accomplishments and hope you are too! This is not a long break, so do something fun if you can, go out to dinner, spend time with friends and family and relax. We’ll see you in about 10 days!!

Fill out the Technology student satisfaction survey

3rd Prize – 20 Sharkpoints

Thank you in advance for your participation. - Technology at Simmons College

Parking Policy
We realize that parking around the SOM is a major challenge for all of you commuting to campus, but recently a number of students have been parking during the week in the SOM parking spaces without prior permission. Parking spaces are reserved through the Operations Department for faculty and other SOM visitors. We have 17 spaces and 60 faculty and staff, plus a huge number of guests. Most recently, we had senior executives from Verizon visiting the SOM who were unable to park due to students violating our parking policy. When students park in the spaces, it results in chaos for our Operations staff and is a huge inconvenience for people who have been promised parking. Although some spaces may be empty, they are still reserved and will be used at a later time. We are asking you to please adhere to our parking policy before you put us in a position of having to tow. Thank you for your cooperation.

HARD WOOD FLOORS BEING REDONE - 411 GOLD, OVAL, LOBBIES
As part of the remodeling and relocation process we have contractors coming in next week (4/18 - 4/22) to refinish some of the hardwood floors in 411. They will be doing the floors in the Gold Room, 2nd Floor Lobby outside the Gold, the Oval Dining Room, and the Lobby outside the Oval Dining. This project will effect the routes you typically take getting to and from 409 and 411.
Here are some suggested detours:

Detours:

1) If you are visiting faculty in 411 - please use entrance from 409 Lobby, through CGO and up the red carpeted stairs to faculty offices on 3rd floors.

2) If you are going to MBA Office:
Best route: Through outside back entrance (off of Marlborough St.).
Longer route: Take 409 Lobby elevator to 2nd Floor. Go through Dean's Conference Room - Cross over into the Green Room and the take the 411 elevator to the Basement Floor.

Thanks for your patience and cooperation.

RED SOX UPDATES
While it has been wonderful to celebrate the Red Sox winning the World Series last year, the return of baseball makes parking and getting to the SOM more than a little challenging!! The week of April 25, there are 3 home games, Monday-Wednesday against Baltimore. If you commute through the Fenway area, it is probably worth downloading the Red Sox schedule and putting it near you to check on a regular basis!! It will reduce your aggravation level significantly!

MBA OFFICE HOURS DURING THE BREAK
The MBA office will be open 8:30-4:30 during the semester break. We will be closed for Patriots day on April 18. Mary D will be on vacation, but Suzzette and Paula will be here.

FINALS AND CLASS NORMS
Most of you are counting the days until next Friday, and checking off your big deliverables as they occur or you hand them in. But, many students still have finals and papers due, so I would ask students who have finished to be respectful of the fact that not everyone is done and students need to be able to find quiet spaces and study rooms to complete their work. Please also remember that when exams are occuring in Mockler, the joy of finishing can often be heard within the classroom by those not yet done. If you could remember to celebrate outside the building, your classmates would appreciate it!!

GRADUATION UPDATES
The initial graduation list will be posted in Mockler on Thursday, April 7. If you are not on that list, or are on the list and shouldn't be, please contact Paula ASAP. If you are not on the list, do not panic!!

We have done our first round of transcript checks for graduating students. If there is a problem, Paula will be contacting you. This first check is to insure you have the correct number of credits to graduate in August.

Graduation invitations are in the MBA office. Students can pick up a maximum of 10 invitations at this time. More will likely be available later! Please remember, it is unlimited seating at the John Hancock Hall, so invite all your friends and family!!

Our graduation speaker this year will be Paula Sneed, Senior Vice President, Global Marketing Resources and Initiatives, Kraft Foods. A complete bio is coming soon.

The Dean's Reception this year will be at the Copley Fairmont and graduation will be held at the John Hancock Hall. Both locations are downtown.

A WebCT site for graduation will be set up at the beginning of the summer term.

The class gift committee has sent an email to all graduating students and are looking for students to help them. Please read the email!!

Leadership Conference Volunteers
The day is almost here! Conference assignments were emailed this week. If you didn't receive yours, please email Ali Corvino at AHCorvino@comcast.net. Thank you for volunteering. It's going to be another awesome conference because of your help.

Bookstore
You are now able to purchase your course material online at www.bkstore.com/simmons. Also the bookstore is now open at 419 Comm Ave, a schedule was placed in your mailbox.

QA Book Information
Students have been having trouble ordering the textbook package online for GSM 415 Quantitative Analysis. If you are having trouble locating this course material, please refer to the publisher's website (www.prenhall.com) and search under the given ISBN number (0-13-1041517) from the online course material list. This will allow you to see what this pack includes, and may make it easier to locate through other online channels.

INTERIM CLASS RANKINGS
Many students have asked the MBA office recently if they can get their class rank at the end of their semester. The answer is that we only do the class rankings at graduation and here is the reason: There are 6 tracks at the SOM and 15 subtracks. Prior to graduation, each subtrack is taking a different number of courses and credits, and it is impossible to do an accurate class ranking relative to your classmates. Graduation is the only point where everyone has completed the same number of credits. However, everyone does have an individual GPA calculation at the end of each semester. Hopefully this makes sense, if not, ask Mary D to explain it better!

SOM in the News

On April 8th, Dr. Deborah Kolb, SOM Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor of Women and Leadership and CGO Faculty Affiliate, gave a presentation entitled "Her Place at the Table: A Woman's Guide to Negotiating Five Challenges of Leadership," based on her recent book of the same title, to approximately 60 members of the Association for Corporate Growth in Waltham, MA.

The Simmons School of Management was a source of information on the challenges facing women executives as HP CEO Carly Fiorina announced her resignation. Acting Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands contributed comments to the February 10th editions of both Newsday and Boston Herald, stating that what happened to Fiorina happens to many CEOs in the field, but the visibility of women CEOs and their work is heightened because there are so few in their ranks.

SOM Professor Stacy Blake-Beard was quoted in the January issue of Workforce Management in the article “Lessons from the Donald.” Blake-Beard says The Apprentice’s message is to look out for yourself above all else, and that, in reality, organizations promote the star.

Mary Finlay SOM ’90, deputy chief information officer at Partners HealthCare System, received one of 10 New England Business and Technology Association awards. The NEBATA awards program recognizes New England business and technology leaders who have made a significant impact in developing or deploying technologies that address critical business issues while contributing to the region’s prosperity.

Ann Fudge, Chairman & CEO of Young and Rubicam Brands and former SOM Executive in Residence, was featured in the February issue of Black Enterprise magazine as one of the 75 most powerful African Americans in Corporate America.

Simmons College Alumna in the News
Alicia Canady who graduated from the UG program in 2003 with a degree in Marketing, has been working with other young Black professional women to start a new organization: The Young Black Women's Society (YBWS). They have just launched a brief web presence: http://www.ybws.org/
