General Information

CHANGE IN INCOMPLETE POLICY EFFECTIVE WITH SUMMER TERM, 2005
The curriculum committee has approved a change to the incomplete policy that will become effective with the summer term, 2005. We have bolded the change.
1. Incompletes
Incompletes are given only where exceptional extenuating circumstances beyond a student’s control occur. If a faculty member does assign an Incomplete, the student must complete all the required work for the semester by the following deadlines:

If the course for which an Incomplete is being granted is a pre-requisite for a course in which the student is registered in the following semester, the student must complete all outstanding work for the Incomplete by the end of the first week of classes in the following semester. All work must be delivered to the MBA office. If the student is going on a Leave of Absence or is not taking a sequential course that requires the course as a pre-requisite, students will have until October 15 for summer semester, February 15 for fall semester, and June 15 for spring semester. If any of these dates fall on a weekend or holiday, the due date for completing required work will be the first business day following. Normally, if work is not completed within this time frame, the grade of Incomplete will be replaced by a grade of Failure. If a student is enrolled in a course for which the incomplete course is a prerequisite, the student may be withdrawn from the current semester course.

Operations Weekly Update: Building Changes & Office Moves
1) The hardwood floors on 1st and 2nd Floors of 411 Comm Ave were refinished this week. Feel free to come and take a peek - they look great and give a whole new feelings to the buildings.
2) Card Readers are being installed in back of 411 (MBA Office back door) and the front door of 407 Comm Ave. Although these are here, they will NOT be ACTIVATED for sometime. We'll keep you posted as to when they are officially in use.
3) CAREER SERVICES MOVING: On Tuesday, 5/3 the Career Services Office will be relocating to their new home in 411 Comm Ave Building on the 3rd Floor. It will take about a day to relocate them so they will be a bit "out of service," for this day. When they settle, Wendy will be in Office 41, Diana will be in Office 42 and Ellie will be in Office 43. Starting Wed, 5/3, please feel free to stop by and see their new space.
4) CENTER for GENDER ORGANIZATIONS MOVING: On Wednesday, 5/4, CGO will be relocating as well. It will take about 1 day to get them up and running as well. Tara Hudson and Patricia Deyton will be moving to 407 Comm Ave, Room 43.
5) 5th Floor Study Rooms (411): The old resident assistant apartment is being renovated currently. This space will be transformed into 6 study rooms for the students. This project will be complete in a month or so.
6) MBA/Operations MOVE: This move is projected for early June.
7) Library/Livingroom/Media MOVE: This move is projected for last week July - 2nd week of August.

Parking Policy
We realize that parking around the SOM is a major challenge for all of you commuting to campus, but recently a number of students have been parking during the week in the SOM parking spaces without prior permission. Parking spaces are reserved through the Operations Department for faculty and other SOM visitors. We have 17 spaces and 60 faculty and staff, plus a huge number of guests. Most recently, we had senior executives from Verizon visiting the SOM who were unable to park due to students violating our parking policy. When students park in the spaces, it results in chaos for our Operations staff and is a huge inconvenience for people who have been promised parking. Although some spaces may be empty, they are still reserved and will be used at a later time. We are asking you to please adhere to our parking policy before you put us in a position of having to tow. Thank you for your cooperation.

RED SOX UPDATES
While it has been wonderful to celebrate the Red Sox winning the World Series last year, the return of baseball makes parking and getting to the SOM more than a little challenging!! The week of April 25, there are 3 home games, Monday-Wednesday against Baltimore. If you commute through the Fenway area, it is probably worth downloading the Red Sox schedule and putting it near you to check on a regular basis!! It will reduce your aggravation level significantly!

On April 13th, Mary Shapiro, SOM Adjunct Assistant Professor, gave a talk entitled "Career Dilemmas and Gender Differences" at Hewlett Packard's Littleton, MA location.

On April 8th, Dr. Deborah Kolb, SOM Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor of Women and Leadership and CGO Faculty Affiliate, gave a presentation entitled "Her Place at the Table: A Woman's Guide to Negotiating Five Challenges of Leadership," based on her recent book of the same title, to approximately 60 members of the Association for Corporate Growth in Waltham, MA.

The Simmons School of Management was a source of information on the challenges facing women executives as HP CEO Carly Fiorina announced her resignation. Acting Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands contributed comments to the February 10th editions of both Newsday and Boston Herald, stating that what happened to Fiorina happens to many CEOs in the field, but the visibility of women CEOs and their work is heightened because there are so few in their ranks.

SOM Professor Stacy Blake-Beard was quoted in the January issue of Workforce Management in the article “Lessons from the Donald.” Blake-Beard says The Apprentice’s message is to look out for yourself above all else, and that, in reality, organizations promote the star.

Mary Finlay SOM ’90, deputy chief information officer at Partners HealthCare System, received one of 10 New England Business and Technology Association awards. The NEBATA awards program recognizes New England business and technology leaders who have made a significant impact in developing or deploying technologies that address critical business issues while contributing to the region’s prosperity.

Ann Fudge, Chairman & CEO of Young and Rubicam Brands and former SOM Executive in Residence, was featured in the February issue of Black Enterprise magazine as one of the 75 most powerful African Americans in Corporate America.
