NOTE
FROM MARY D The conference was a huge success and was our largest ever with 2800 participants. An extra special thanks to your fellow student Ali Corvino, who will graduate this August. She has been working on the conference for the last two years as a volunteer manager. All of you who have taken Operations know that when you look at an event of this scale and complexity, you have a unique appreciation of all the planning and execution that occurs behind the scenes that is seamless to the conference attendees. Ali has been integrally involved in many of the conference operations with Judy Benjamin as well as being an evening student and working full time. To take on this role as a volunteer is tremendous, and a special thank you to her as well!! Given the majority of speakers were fabulous at the conference, I thought you might like this quote: from Doc Childre and Bruce Cryer, in their book From Chaos to Coherence: "Presence is a rare quality in a world of 20-second sound bites, nonstop stimulation, and gnawing anxiety. What underlies presence? Clearly, it is not intellectual prowess or Mensa would rule the world. More than once we all have been bored to tears by the intellectual aloofness of someone disconnected from everyday reality, adrift in a conceptual universe of his or her own creation...Could presence be heart-generated coherence in the world of personal magnetics? People with presence have an ineffable quality about them; they are "present," surprisingly attentive, and undistracted. A fullness, a centeredness, a wholeness radiates from them." As we start a new semester, here is another quote: "Energy and persistence alter all things."-Benjamin Franklin OPERATIONS

IN INCOMPLETE POLICY EFFECTIVE WITH SUMMER TERM, 2005 If the course for which an Incomplete is being granted is a pre-requisite for a course in which the student is registered in the following semester, the student must complete all outstanding work for the Incomplete by the end of the first week of classes in the following semester. All work must be delivered to the MBA office. If the student is going on a Leave of Absence or is not taking a sequential course that requires the course as a pre-requisite, students will have until October 15 for summer semester, February 15 for fall semester, and June 15 for spring semester. If any of these dates fall on a weekend or holiday, the due date for completing required work will be the first business day following. Normally, if work is not completed within this time frame, the grade of Incomplete will be replaced by a grade of Failure. If a student is enrolled in a course for which the incomplete course is a prerequisite, the student may be withdrawn from the current semester course. Operations

On April 13th, Mary Shapiro, SOM Adjunct Assistant Professor, gave a talk entitled "Career Dilemmas and Gender Differences" at Hewlett Packard's Littleton, MA location. On April 8th, Dr. Deborah Kolb, SOM Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor of Women and Leadership and CGO Faculty Affiliate, gave a presentation entitled "Her Place at the Table: A Woman's Guide to Negotiating Five Challenges of Leadership," based on her recent book of the same title, to approximately 60 members of the Association for Corporate Growth in Waltham, MA. The Simmons School of Management was a source of information on the challenges facing women executives as HP CEO Carly Fiorina announced her resignation. Acting Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands contributed comments to the February 10th editions of both Newsday and Boston Herald, stating that what happened to Fiorina happens to many CEOs in the field, but the visibility of women CEOs and their work is heightened because there are so few in their ranks. SOM Professor Stacy Blake-Beard was quoted in the January issue of Workforce Management in the article “Lessons from the Donald.” Blake-Beard says The Apprentice’s message is to look out for yourself above all else, and that, in reality, organizations promote the star. Mary Finlay SOM ’90, deputy chief information officer at Partners HealthCare System, received one of 10 New England Business and Technology Association awards. The NEBATA awards program recognizes New England business and technology leaders who have made a significant impact in developing or deploying technologies that address critical business issues while contributing to the region’s prosperity. Ann Fudge, Chairman & CEO of Young and Rubicam Brands and former SOM Executive in Residence, was featured in the February issue of Black Enterprise magazine as one of the 75 most powerful African Americans in Corporate America.
