QUOTES FOR THE WEEK
The weather has finally turned and we have entered the season of graduations, weddings, and other weekend activities that make it challenging to stay on top of your schoolwork! Many students, particularly graduating students, are coming off a week of multiple deliverables and presentations. Some had 4 deliverables plus a presentation. Saturday classes have started and many run all day. We are already at the end of the third week of classes, and that will either excite you or scare you!! Here are my quotes for the week!!

"Morale is a state of mind. It is steadfastness and courage and hope. It is confidence and zeal and loyalty. It is elan, esprit de corps and determination.” --Gen. George C. Marshall

"We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort.” --Jesse Owens

NOTE FROM THE MBA OFFICE
There has been an unusual amount of student use of our copy machine over the last month. Please remember that the copy machine is not a public copy machine for general student use. We ask that you use the copiers in the library whenever possible, but that if you need to make a copy for class, please ask someone in our office before you use it. We are happy to help in a pinch, but would prefer that it not become a substitute for other student copiers.

GRADUATION UPDATES
Cap and Gown Lottery Forms are due by noon on May 13
Data sheets, speaker, marshal and nomination forms for the Pat Miller Award are due on May 20

For all of us, this is a critically important survey as we strive to continuously improve our services to you. Please take the time to fill it out so we can continue to improve our services.

EXTERNAL EVENTS:

WITI Presents
What:
WITI will present “Operational Excellence and Execution: Critical Steps to Advancing Women’s Leadership in Corporate America”
Date: Monday, May 16
Time: 7:30 am to 9:30 am
Place: Boston University Corporate Education Center, 72 Tyng Road, Tyngsboro

Panelists: France Lampron, Founder & Pres. of Nuvosoft; Jennifer Francis, Sr. VP/Partner of CB Richard Ellis; Jane Eggers, General Manager of Intuit’s Innovation Lab.

Admission: $25 for members; $45 for non-members

One of the puzzling trends in women’s leadership is the small percentage who careers with operational responsibility. Women typically embark on careers in marketing and Human Resources, thereby getting stuck in “pink ghettos.” In many industries and companies, operational experience is critical to building a strong leadership portfolio and achieving career advancement and success.

This program explores different corporate environments, critical values that women bring to business, and the importance of P&L experience to women’s leadership development. The panel of experts will provide candid advice on how successful business unit management can provide tremendous career satisfaction and help you climb the corporate ladder. For more information about the event, visit WITI’s website at www.witi.com/boston.

For more information about WITI, call Rosemary Brutico at 781-270-0480; or email her at rbrutico@quintcomm.com

SOM in the News

Simmons SOM cited as a "model program" for working mothers!
http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/may2005/nf2005054_9530_db_083.htm

On April 13th, Mary Shapiro, SOM Adjunct Assistant Professor, gave a talk entitled "Career Dilemmas and Gender Differences" at Hewlett Packard's Littleton, MA location.

On April 8th, Dr. Deborah Kolb, SOM Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor of Women and Leadership and CGO Faculty Affiliate, gave a presentation entitled "Her Place at the Table: A Woman's Guide to Negotiating Five Challenges of Leadership," based on her recent book of the same title, to approximately 60 members of the Association for Corporate Growth in Waltham, MA.

The Simmons School of Management was a source of information on the challenges facing women executives as HP CEO Carly Fiorina announced her resignation. Acting Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands contributed comments to the February 10th editions of both Newsday and Boston Herald, stating that what happened to Fiorina happens to many CEOs in the field, but the visibility of women CEOs and their work is heightened because there are so few in their ranks.

SOM Professor Stacy Blake-Beard was quoted in the January issue of Workforce Management in the article “Lessons from the Donald.” Blake-Beard says The Apprentice’s message is to look out for yourself above all else, and that, in reality, organizations promote the star.

Mary Finlay SOM ’90, deputy chief information officer at Partners HealthCare System, received one of 10 New England Business and Technology Association awards. The NEBATA awards program recognizes New England business and technology leaders who have made a significant impact in developing or deploying technologies that address critical business issues while contributing to the region’s prosperity.

Ann Fudge, Chairman & CEO of Young and Rubicam Brands and former SOM Executive in Residence, was featured in the February issue of Black Enterprise magazine as one of the 75 most powerful African Americans in Corporate America.

Simmons College Alumna in the News
Alicia Canady who graduated from the UG program in 2003 with a degree in Marketing, has been working with other young Black professional women to start a new organization: The Young Black Women's Society (YBWS). They have just launched a brief web presence: http://www.ybws.org/
