General Information

NOTE FROM MARY D
The sun is finally shining as I search for my quotes of the week! With any luck, the good weather will finally stay long enough to really feel that spring is here! Study hard, stay focused, but make sure you take some time for yourself and your family and/or friends and remember, a long weekend is just around the corner!! See what you think of these quotes-

"We must believe in ourselves or no one else will believe in us; we must match our aspirations with the competence, courage and determination to succeed. "--Rosalyn Sussman Yalow US medical physicist
"Become the change you want to see” Oprah Winfrey

Birth Announcement
It's a Girl! Ellie gave birth to Lucy Virginia Ward at 6:20 pm on Monday, May 16th (7 lbs. 11oz). Mom, Dad and Lucy are doing great!!!!

STUDENT SATISFACTION SURVEY
The Student Services Survey was launched today (5/19/05), so please check your email. This survey is incredibly important and it will only take a few moments to complete. It is much shorter than the Noel Levitz Survey; you will literally be done within ten minutes. As always, we have an incentive for you - a small bag of candy which will hit the spot at any point in your day (especially on those long days). Please help us to help you by providing your feedback!!! Thank you in advance for your participation.

Academic Advising
Mary D. and Suzzette Turnbull are the academic advisors for all SOM graduate students. If you need advising, please contact us to schedule an appointment. We're happy to map out your classes for the remainder of your MBA career and assist in addressing any unforeseen circumstances in your life. Although we discuss this during Foundations, we realize that you receive a tremendous amount of information during that class. We look forward to hearing from anyone in need of this service.

SOM MEDIA COVERAGE ON LEADERSHIP, OPTING IN/OPTING OUT
The SOM has been getting a lot of media coverage around the issues of women opting out or opting in. Below are three links to articles that you might enjoy reading.
1. CGO Insight #20
2. HP survey results
3. Businesswomen want to be leaders at work

GRADUATION UPDATES
As a reminder all graduation related forms are due to the MBA Office by tomorrow Friday, May 20. All forms are available on WebCT.

NOTE FROM THE MBA OFFICE
There has been an unusual amount of student use of our copy machine over the last month. Please remember that the copy machine is not a public copy machine for general student use. We ask that you use the copiers in the library whenever possible, but that if you need to make a copy for class, please ask someone in our office before you use it. We are happy to help in a pinch, but would prefer that it not become a substitute for other student copiers.

GRADUATION UPDATES
Cap and Gown Lottery Forms are due by noon on May 13
Data sheets, speaker, marshal and nomination forms for the Pat Miller Award are due on May 20
Graduation tickets are available and students needing extra tickets can pick them up in the MBA office now.

SOM in the News

Simmons SOM cited as a "model program" for working mothers!
http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/may2005/nf2005054_9530_db_083.htm

On April 13th, Mary Shapiro, SOM Adjunct Assistant Professor, gave a talk entitled "Career Dilemmas and Gender Differences" at Hewlett Packard's Littleton, MA location.

On April 8th, Dr. Deborah Kolb, SOM Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor of Women and Leadership and CGO Faculty Affiliate, gave a presentation entitled "Her Place at the Table: A Woman's Guide to Negotiating Five Challenges of Leadership," based on her recent book of the same title, to approximately 60 members of the Association for Corporate Growth in Waltham, MA.

The Simmons School of Management was a source of information on the challenges facing women executives as HP CEO Carly Fiorina announced her resignation. Acting Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands contributed comments to the February 10th editions of both Newsday and Boston Herald, stating that what happened to Fiorina happens to many CEOs in the field, but the visibility of women CEOs and their work is heightened because there are so few in their ranks.

SOM Professor Stacy Blake-Beard was quoted in the January issue of Workforce Management in the article “Lessons from the Donald.” Blake-Beard says The Apprentice’s message is to look out for yourself above all else, and that, in reality, organizations promote the star.

Mary Finlay SOM ’90, deputy chief information officer at Partners HealthCare System, received one of 10 New England Business and Technology Association awards. The NEBATA awards program recognizes New England business and technology leaders who have made a significant impact in developing or deploying technologies that address critical business issues while contributing to the region’s prosperity.

Ann Fudge, Chairman & CEO of Young and Rubicam Brands and former SOM Executive in Residence, was featured in the February issue of Black Enterprise magazine as one of the 75 most powerful African Americans in Corporate America.

Simmons College Alumna in the News
Alicia Canady who graduated from the UG program in 2003 with a degree in Marketing, has been working with other young Black professional women to start a new organization: The Young Black Women's Society (YBWS). They have just launched a brief web presence: http://www.ybws.org/
