Even the students taking one or two courses are finding that the workload is heavy and it is hard to get your head around some of the concepts! The weather is nice and studying on the weekend is even harder. Don’t worry, this is all normal for the summer term!! Take a deep breath, try and get outside and do something fun to offset studying and know that a long weekend is coming next week. It really will be fine in the end! The MBA office and your faculty are all available to talk and help with strategies if you need them!

SOM in the News

Simmons School of Management - News Items – May 13, 2004 NEWS SOM Professor and CGO faculty affiliate Dr. Deborah Kolb moderated a panel discussion with senior HP women at their “networking night” on April 30, the evening before the 25th Simmons Women’s Leadership Conference. HP, a sponsor of the Conference, was delighted to have a faculty member of Dr. Kolb’s stature and expertise serve as moderator for the panel.

Dr. Kolb was also quoted in the April 12th edition of the Wall Street Journal. In the article “A little help, please” concerning the duties of professional pay experts, Kolb says women in particular benefit from the negotiation practice, considering that managers are often less receptive to their requests.

Gail Snowden SOM ’77, president of the FleetBoston Financial Foundation, was mentioned in the April 14 Boston Globe editorial “Enterprising Women.” In the editorial, Snowden explained that a way to help minority women entrepreneurs expand their businesses is to recognize the power of their work. The article focused on the Women of Ethnic Diversity Initiative, a three-year project launched by the Commonwealth Institute, a non-profit organization for women entrepreneurs.

In April, Dr. Deborah Merrill-Sands, Associate Dean and CGO Faculty Affiliate, gave two keynote addresses on behalf of CGO at HP facilities in Idaho and Oregon. Her presentations, organized in celebration of Women’s History month, were entitled “Gender Dynamics in the Workplace: Implications for Women and Leadership.” More than 350 HP employees attended.

Professor Fiona Wilson SOM ‘97 was a panelist at the United Way’s National Women in Philanthropy Summit in Chicago on April 17. Wilson shared findings from the Simmons/The Committee of 200 study, “Teen Girls: Are they being empowered?’ and contributed to the discussions on the value of economic empowerment of girls and young women along with other leading women in business and entrepreneurship. Approximately 250 women from around the U.S. attended the summit.

The results of the 2003 Simmons SOM/HP survey conducted at the SOM’s 2003 Women’s Leadership Conference continue to be featured in the media. Most recently, survey results have appeared in Women’s Business, and on careerbuzz.com, VNU eMedia.com, greaterdiversity.com, and moremusic104.com.

SOM Professor Catherine Beyer Hurst attended the Academy of Business Education (ABE) 2004 Conference in Mystic, CT April 22-23, and delivered a workshop entitled “Incorporating Adult Students into the Traditional Undergraduate Management Classroom.” This conference was the first joint meeting of the Allied Business Education Association, comprised of the ABE and the Financial Education Association (FEA). SOM Professor Patricia Clarke presented the paper “Financial Literacy for an Underserved Market: A Service Learning Project for the Introductory Finance Course" at the FEA annual meeting, and she also presented “A Real-Life Case Approach: Diagnosis and Recommendations for Companies Currently at the Crossroads” at the ABE.

SOM Professor and CGO Research Faculty Stacy Blake-Beard was interviewed on WILD Radio, Boston, on May 4 concerning the Professional Women of Color Conference held at Simmons College on May 6. The conference, co-sponsored by Simmons School of Management and Working Mother Media, offered a venue for an unusual and open discussion of problems that professional women of color still face in the workplace. The event drew nearly 200 women from business and academics to discuss differences between white and minority women in the workplace. The Women of Color Town Hall Meeting was the focus of the Boston Globe’s May 7th article, “Inequality among women explored,” and was also discussed by SOM Professor and CGO Research Faculty Stacy Blake-Beard on WBZ 1030AM and WBIX 1060 AM on May 6th. It gained airtime on ABC-affiliate WCVB-TV Boston, as well.

“Destination Success,” the first annual supplier diversity conference co-sponsored by the Center for Women in Enterprise and Simmons School of Management, was held on the Simmons College campus on May 11. The event was specifically for established certified businesses as well as businesses interested in growing through increased access to corporate markets, and was specifically designed for women-owned businesses, minority-owned businesses, and established entrepreneurs. More than 120 entrepreneurs and corporations gathered for the workshops and business fair. Corporate exhibitors also included IBM, Merrill Lynch, Raytheon, Bank of America, UPS, Verizon, TJX, The Castle Group, Testa Hurwitz & Thibeault, and Lasertone.

Simmons School of Management and Simmons College partnered to sponsor the Commonwealth Institute’s 7th annual Breakfast for Champions on May 14. Ann Moore, Chair and CEO of Time, Inc. was the keynote speaker. Moore was in Boston to participate in Time Warner’s Executive Education program with Simmons SOM.
