General Information

MBA OFFICE HAS MOVED!
We are officially moved upstairs as of this morning, June 2! Students will be given access to the back door of 409, which is directly across from Mockler and the front door of 409 as of Friday morning. Access will work from 7am-11pm and is consistent with the current 419 building hours.

GRADUATION UPDATES
The student speaker, marshal and Pat Miller ballots will be open for voting from June 2-June 10. Please go to the graduation Webct site to vote. Congratulations to everyone that has been nominated!

QUOTES OF THE WEEK
"Any fact facing us in not as important as our attitude toward it, for that determines our success or failure.” Norman Vincent Peale

"Leadership is not magnetic personality — that can just as well be a glib tongue. It is not 'making friends and influencing people' -- that is flattery. Leadership is lifting a person's vision to high sights, the raising of a person's performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations." --Peter F. Drucker

NOTE FROM MARY D
The next two weeks are another crunch time for many students with papers, midterms and a few electives coming to a close. By the end of next week, we will be halfway through summer term. The weather has actually turned for the better finally, and it will require some extra effort to stay focused, concentrate on all the work you have ahead, but still take advantage of summer!! Build in som
e time for yourself, your friends and your family as it is really important to stay connected.

STUDENT SATISFACTION SURVEY
We've already achieved a 57% participation rate; thank you to those who have taken the time to complete it. However, this survey is incredibly important. It is specific to the services you receive here at the SOM (as opposed to the Noel Levitz which was college-wide). There are only 15 questions, so you will literally be done within ten minutes. As always, we have an incentive for you - a small bag of candy which will hit the spot at any point in your day (especially on those long days). Please help us to help you by providing your feedback!!! Thank you in advance for your participation.

MBA Office Staff
Paula Donaldson and Suzzette Turnbull will be on vacation Friday, June 3rd, and Monday, June 6th through Friday, June 10th. Please contact Carolyn Bogle (carolyn.bogle@simmons.edu, 617.521.3812) or Mary Dutkiewicz (mary.dutkiewicz@simmons.edu, 617.521.3813) for assistance. Katlyn Cavanaugh, our student worker, will also be in the office Monday through Thursday.

Website Update
We're in the process of posting a direct link to WebCT on our new website. In the meantime, please go to http://academia.simmons.edu/ to access it. Thank you for your patience.

HEAR YOUR FELLOW STUDENT ON WBUR!!
Zuania Pomales, a current day student was interviewed on WBUR and her segment aired today. She was part of an interview on why women of color graduates are leaving Boston. She mentions the SOM too!! http://publicbroadcasting.net/wbur/news/content/775813.html

REGISTRATION INFORMATION FOR FALL, 2005
Registration for Fall, 2005 is scheduled to open on June 20, 2005. More information will be coming within the next two weeks.

CLASS NORM REMINDERS
It is that time of the year where we need to remind students again of class norms that tend to start to slide a bit. Please try and limit the amount of times that you need to come in and leave class and remember to turn your phones off or to the silent mode. We know that there can be very good reasons for coming in late, leaving early, needing your phone on, etc., but when you move it from an individual perspective to a class perspective, it can be very disruptive for both faculty and your fellow students when it is constant. We are asking you to be a bit more conscious of how these things impact the quality of the classroom experience!

Volunteer Opportunity to Write a Business Plan
Pine Street Inn, Inc., the northeast’s oldest and largest provider of services to people who are homeless, is looking for a graduate student to develop an excellent and in-depth business plan for its potential social enterprise venture, PACT (Pine Street Inn Alliance for Collaboration in Training.) PACT is an exciting collaborative opportunity for Greater Boston human services agencies to share their expertise and resources to provide excellent, lower-cost, streamlined and relevant training for their employees. A special focus of the alliance is on building the skills employees need to serve people who are homeless or formerly homeless.

This is an excellent opportunity to showcase and utilize your MBA degree as well as build your resume. Pine Street Inn, Inc. is seeking someone immediately. Contact Suzzette Turnbull or Mary Dutkiewicz for more information and/or if you’re interested.

In addition, Jill and Fiona (in partnership with colleagues from the University of Bodo, Norway) will be presenting their paper, "Across Cultural And Economic Boundaries: Modeling Cognitions, Norms, And Motivations Onto Entrepreneurial Self-efficacy And Intentionality."

Lindsay Titus ('05), Jill Kickul, and Patrick Murphy (DePaul University), using some of the recent research from the Panel Survey of Entrepreneurial Dynamics (PSED) will be presenting a paper on "Contextualizing Legitimacy, Risk Preference, and Social Capital For Women Entrepreneurs." Also, in partnership with Norris Krueger (Boise State University) and as a follow-up to the work by Laney Whitcanack ('05) and Jill on entrepreneurial cognition, we will be giving a talk on "Choice Modeling Of Venture Preferences: The Impact Of Mental Prototyping."

Finally, Laney Whitcanack and Jill Kickul are collaborating on an international study with Alain Fayolle, E.M. Lyon, France, Benoît Gailly, Université Catholique de Louvain, and Nargisse Lassas-Clerc, E.M. Lyon and will be presenting their work at the International Conference of Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ICSB Conference) on "Capturing Variations in Attitudes and Intentions: A Longitudinal Study to Assess the Pedagogical Effectiveness of Entrepreneurship Teaching Programs." This paper and line of research coincides nicely with our recent grant award under the Coleman Foundation's Entrepreneurship Excellence in Teaching Colleges program.

Simmons SOM cited as a "model program" for working mothers!

On April 13th, Mary Shapiro, SOM Adjunct Assistant Professor, gave a talk entitled "Career Dilemmas and Gender Differences" at Hewlett Packard's Littleton, MA location.

On April 8th, Dr. Deborah Kolb, SOM Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor of Women and Leadership and CGO Faculty Affiliate, gave a presentation entitled "Her Place at the Table: A Woman's Guide to Negotiating Five Challenges of Leadership," based on her recent book of the same title, to approximately 60 members of the Association for Corporate Growth in Waltham, MA.

The Simmons School of Management was a source of information on the challenges facing women executives as HP CEO Carly Fiorina announced her resignation. Acting Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands contributed comments to the February 10th editions of both Newsday and Boston Herald, stating that what happened to Fiorina happens to many CEOs in the field, but the visibility of women CEOs and their work is heightened because there are so few in their ranks.

SOM Professor Stacy Blake-Beard was quoted in the January issue of Workforce Management in the article “Lessons from the Donald.” Blake-Beard says The Apprentice’s message is to look out for yourself above all else, and that, in reality, organizations promote the star.

Mary Finlay SOM ’90, deputy chief information officer at Partners HealthCare System, received one of 10 New England Business and Technology Association awards. The NEBATA awards program recognizes New England business and technology leaders who have made a significant impact in developing or deploying technologies that address critical business issues while contributing to the region’s prosperity.

Ann Fudge, Chairman & CEO of Young and Rubicam Brands and former SOM Executive in Residence, was featured in the February issue of Black Enterprise magazine as one of the 75 most powerful African Americans in Corporate America.

Simmons College Alumna in the News
Alicia Canady who graduated from the UG program in 2003 with a degree in Marketing, has been working with other young Black professional women to start a new organization: The Young Black Women's Society (YBWS). They have just launched a brief web presence: http://www.ybws.org/
