The mission of the Simmons School of Management is to educate women for power and leadership. Voting for Class Speaker, Class Marshall and the Pat Miller Leadership Award will close tomorrow (Friday June 11th). If you have not yet voted, please log on to Graduation WebCT and cast your vote. If you have any questions contact Paula at 617-521-3832.

First Graduation Meeting
Mark your calendars. The first graduation meeting is going to be held on June 23 at 5:15-5:45pm for evening students and on June 24 at 12-12:30pm for day students. .

Free Technology Training
A reminder to all SOM students that technology training is available at the main campus free of charge. View the training calendar at ptrc.simmons.edu/calendar.asp to see what classes are being offered.

GRADUATION SPEAKER ANNOUNCED
The Dean has announced that Marie Wilson has accepted her invitation to deliver the graduation remarks. Ms. Wilson was president of the Ms. Foundation for 20 years, a foundation that has an endowment of 16 million dollars. She was also responsible for the “Take Your Daughters to Work” initiative. She is currently president of the White House Project, a nonpartisan organization founded to put more women into leadership. A full bio will be out shortly.

CHANGE IN JUNE 23 DEAN’S ROUNDTABLE DATE
The Dean has agreed to move her June 23 roundtable with students to June 30 to clear the time for the first graduation meeting. Signups will be on the Mockler bulletin board.

Financial Aid Information

Financial Aid Updates

Student loans for 1 semester enrollment periods are disbursed in 2 disbursements, 1 at the beginning of the enrollment period, and 1 half-way through the enrollment period.

Students who will graduate in August should have received the first disbursement of their April term loans. The second 1/2 of the loan will be disbursed at the end of June. Refunds will be processed within 14 calendar days of the receipt of funds and mailed to the address that is current with the Registrar's Office. If you need funds for living expenses earlier than this, please contact your assigned financial aid counselor. You will need to come by the Office of Student Financial Services on the main campus to sign for any advance. You will continue to receive bills as long as there is any unpaid balance on your account. If your remaining loan funds that will arrive in June will cover the balance, you do not need to make payment. If your loan funds will not cover your balance, payment is due immediately. Please contact a student account representative with any billing questions you may have.

Student Clubs

Student Clubs at the SOM are run by and organized by SOM students. The MBA Office Staff assists with the transition from one year to the next by gathering names of interested students and by setting up each club in WebCT.

Interested in getting more involved in Marketing?
Join the Simmons Marketing Group-the newest Simmons student club. As a collegiate branch of the American Marketing Association, the SMG will be able to attend events such as the end-of-year networking party of the Boston AMA chapter, as well as connect with Boston area marketing professionals for speaking engagements and events. TECHNOLOGY

Computer Lab

NEW SOFTWARE
We now have a multimedia production computer in the lab. Computer #12 in the lab (the one with the scanner) now has the following software installed on it: Macromedia Dreamweaver and the Adobe Creative Suite which includes the following programs: Photoshop, ImageReady, Illustrator, InDesign, GoLive and Acrobat Pro. Now you can scan and edit your images as well as build a website. If you have questions about this software please contact Bill Porter of the Technology staff.

Reminder: Food, drinks or cell phones are NOT allowed in the computer lab or study rooms, sorry. This rules will be enforced by lab staff.

Access to personal network folders in Windows XP
A Handout is available in the computer lab. It explains how to use a personal login to access your own network 100MB folder. It's a more secure alternative to saving files to the Student Data drive. Please be sure to restart lab computers after you use your personal login. Feel free to approach lab staff with questions about how this works.

Problems?
If you experience any problems with the computers please record it in the Problems Notation Log located in each study room or tell the lab staff.

Sunday 7am-7pm

SOM Lab (staffed) Hours:

CGO Receives Diversity Leadership Award from the Women's Transportation Seminar (WTS)
The Center for Gender in Organizations (CGO) is the recipient of the Women’s Transportation Seminar’s Boston Diversity Leadership Award. The award goes to the person or organization that has exemplified a deep dedication to both leadership and diversity in work, extra curricular activities, and personal interactions. The award will be presented at the WTS’s Annual Award Dinner on June 17.

SOM Professors presented two papers at the Babson Kauffman Entrepreneurship Research Conference held in Glasgow, Scotland on June 2-6. Professors Jill Kickul, Fiona Wilson, and Deb Marlino presented “Are Misalignments of Perceptions and Self-Efficacy Causing Gender Gaps in Entrepreneurial Intentions Among Our Nations’ Teens?” In addition, Kickul present “A Cognitive Processing Model of Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy and Intentionality” with Dr. Norris Krueger of Boise State University. Kickul also chaired a session on entrepreneurial cognition.

The Center for Gender in Organizations (CGO) at the SOM has been chosen by the Boston Chapter of the Women's Transportation Seminar to receive the WTS-Boston Diversity Leadership Award. This award "goes to a person or organization that has exemplified a deep dedication to both leadership and diversity in work." Dr. Evangelina Holvino, CGO Director, and Dr. Deborah Merrill-Sands, SOM Associate Dean, will be receiving the award for CGO at WTS's Annual Awards Dinner on June 17th.

Dr. Evangelina Holvino, CGO Director and senior research faculty, and Dr. Stacy Blake-Beard, SOM associate professor and CGO faculty affiliate, were invited speakers at the Spelman College Leadership Symposium and Conference, held on May 12-14, 2004 at the request of Dr. Beverly Daniel Tatum, President of Spelman College. The first national leadership conference of its kind, the conference was entitled Women of Color Leadership in the 21st Century: “It’s Our Turn.” Bringing together a cadre of nationally renowned leadership experts, diversity scholars, and corporate, political and community leaders, the conference attracted women of color from across the country. Dr. Holvino spoke on two panels: “Gender Schisms and Other ‘isms’: The Deadly Intersections of Women of Color,” and “The Call to Lead: Strategies for Collaborative Leadership Models and Initiatives.” Stacy Blake-Beard spoke on the panel, “Mentoring and Sponsorship for Women of Color.”

Mary Beth Borgwing SOM ’98 appeared in the May edition of Women’s Business Boston. The article featured how she has made financial services a career filled with options, and is applying the same strategy in the marketing of risk and insurance services at Marsh.

Geri Rhoades SOM ’98 also appeared in the May edition of Women’s Business Boston. Rhoades penned the article “Get the most from your business coach,” which she writes as president of Renewed Direction, Wellesley, a personal and business coaching practice.

EVENTS

Spread the word to prospective women MBA students about the upcoming SOM MBA Information Session. They’ll hear from Dean Patricia O'Brien, alumnae, students, and faculty as they talk about the Simmons MBA experience. They will learn what it takes to earn a Simmons MBA and how it will open up a world of possibilities and opportunities. Topics include the one-year accelerated program, part-time options, curriculum, career placement, financing the degree, and the application process.
