GrThe 4th of July holiday cannot come quick enough for most students! We have had the first graduation meeting, BGGE and Op’s have both finished their midterms and many electives are winding down. You have two more pushes… one is now and the other is the month of July. Hang in there!! The 4th of July holiday is a week away and I hope everyone takes the long weekend to do something fun! Go to a cookout, the beach, the movies!! Do something to recharge your batteries for the July push and know that the MBA office and your faculty are here to help if you need us!!

If you haven’t heard The Class Gift of 2004 has been chosen! The class has decided to honor its legacy with The Corporate Outreach Initiative, which sponsors three corporate executives to visit the school for five years. To support this goal we need to raise a minimum of $25,000 in pledges and gifts before we graduate in August 2004. The committee challenges you to honor your legacy and help our class extend this gift this gift for years to come. We need 100% participation, hard work, and creativity to reach our goal. A committee member will be speaking with you soon about the process and the incentives involved with giving. The SOM appreciates your generosity and support.

News from Executive Education
The SOM is delighted to welcome Martha Sheehan, SOM Alumane’01, as the Director of Executive Education. Martha joined the department in May. Her background includes more than a decade of experience in both higher education and private industry, most recently at the Babson School of Executive Education where she recruited founding corporate members, developed programs and deliverables and managed faculty research for the newly minted Institute for Process Management, a research program at Babson SEE. Prior to Babson, Martha was the Associate Executive Director at the Massachusetts Telecommunications Council (MTC), a 300 member industry association where she increased corporate membership and sponsorships, while running more than twenty-five programs annually, overseeing internal operations and working closely with a forty-nine member board of industry leaders. Before the MTC, Martha was the Director of Graduate Admissions at Wheelock College, where she worked closely with faculty chairs to identify potential markets and customize programs to meet market needs, resulting in a 30% increase in student enrollment. Prior to Wheelock, Martha was the vice president of Business Management Concepts (BMC), a management consulting firm, where she sold consulting services to university business administrators designed to teach them how to improve auxiliary services and maximize profit potential. As VP, Martha crafted proposals, made presentations, negotiated fees, landed contracts and provided services to more than 30 accounts, including landing BMC’s largest client, the Massachusetts State College system.

In responding to the question of how she views her role as Director of Executive Education, Martha stated, “I chose to pursue my M.B.A. at Simmons because I share with Simmons, a deep commitment to economic transformation and at the same time, recognize the practical need to collaborate with established systems and resources in order to accomplish the goal of making a real, measurable difference in the lives of women. I look forward to applying my skills to encourage women to pursue the kinds of educational and leadership opportunities that have typically not been available to them by attending to the SOM’s mission to educate women for positions of leadership and power.” Please join us in joining Martha to the Simmons family!

INTERNAL EVENTS:

From the Career Services Office
The Grant Institute: Professional Grant Proposal Writing Workshop July 12-14, 2004
Simmons College

The Grant Institute's Grants 101 Course is an intensive and detailed introduction to the process, structure, and skill of professional proposal writing. This course is characterized by its ability to act as a thorough overview, introduction, and refresher at the same time. In this course, participants will learn the entire proposal writing process and complete the course with a solid understanding of not only the ideal proposal structure, but a holistic understanding of the essential factors, which determine whether or not a program gets funded. Through the completion of interactive exercises and activities, participants will complement expert lectures by putting proven techniques into practice. This course is designed for both the beginner looking for a thorough introduction and the intermediate looking for a refresher course that will strengthen their grant acquisition skills. This class, simply put, is designed to get results by creating professional grant proposal writers. Participants will become competent program planning and proposal writing professionals after successful completion of the Grants 101 course. In three active and informative days, students will be exposed to the art of successful grant writing practices, and led on a journey that ends with a masterful grant proposal. Grants 101 consists of three (3) courses that will be completed during the three-day workshop.
FUNDAMENTALS OF PROGRAM PLANNING
This course is centered on the belief that "it's all about the program." This intensive course will teach professional program development essentials and program evaluation. While most grant writing "workshops" treat program development and evaluation as separate from the writing of a proposal, this class will teach students the relationship between overall program planning and grant writing.
PROFESSIONAL GRANT WRITING
Designed for both the novice and experienced grant writer, this course will make each student an overall proposal writing specialist. In addition to teaching the basic components of a grant proposal, successful approaches, and the do's and don'ts of grant writing, this course is infused with expert principles that will lead to a mastery of the process. Strategy resides at the forefront of this course's intent to illustrate grant writing as an integrated, multidimensional, and dynamic endeavor. Each student will learn to stop writing the grant and to start writing the story. Ultimately, this class will illustrate how each component of the grant proposal represents an opportunity to use proven techniques for generating support.
GRANT RESEARCH
At its foundation, this course will address the basics of foundation, corporation, and government grant research. However, this course will teach a strategic funding research approach that encourages students to see research not as something they do before they write a proposal, but as an integrated part of the grant seeking process. Students will be exposed to online and database research tools, as well as publications and directories that contain information about foundation, corporation, and government grant opportunities. Focusing on funding sources and basic social science research, this course teaches students how to use research as part of a strategic grant acquisition effort. REGISTRATION
$597.00 tuition includes all materials and certificates.
Each student will receive:
· The Grant Institute Certificate in Professional Grant writing
· The Grant Institute's Guide to Successful Grant Writing
· A to Z Grant Writing
· The Grant Institute Grant Writer's Workbook with sample proposals, forms, and outlines REGISTRATION METHODS

SOM in the News

The Simmons School of Management’s Executive Education program was featured in the June issue of The Ariel Group Review. The article relates how the SOM used the Ariel’s Leadership Presence program as one module in a recent week-long Executive Education custom program. The Leadership Presence program teaches leaders to inspire and empower others through energy, enthusiasm, and expressiveness.

The Simmons School of Management/The Committee of 200 joint national study Teen Girls on Business: Are They Being Empowered? was referenced in the April 22 issue of the Kansas City Star in the article “Girl Scouts help young women to be next corporate execs.” The article focuses on the regional Girls Scouts’ efforts to encourage girls to rethink business careers. The joint study was also referenced in the article “Next wave of CEOs” in the May 10 issue of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and in the article “Are you chasing the wrong career?” in the May 2 edition of the Daily Reflector (Greenville, SC).

SOM Associate Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands and professor Jill Kickul gave a talk entitled “Women and Business: Aspirations for Leadership and Power” on June 22 to the Research Committee of the Boston Club.
The talk reported on findings from the recent Simmons SOM/HP survey on women’s views on leadership and power conducted at the 2004 Simmons SOM Leadership Conference in May. The two also spoke on the same topic on June 23 to 40 members of the newly formed women’s network of the Boston Chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth.

The Center for Gender in Organizations (CGO) has recently had the honor of receiving a $200,000 grant from the Carnegie Foundation to work with five universities in Africa to assist them with their work on gender and organizational change. She will also participate in a two-week artist residency program in Deer Isle, ME. The Rhode Island Foundation is one of the nation’s largest and oldest charitable foundations serving a specific geographic community.
