Round table change-We are going to move the final dean's roundtable from July 29 to August 5 to not conflict with the final graduation meeting! Signups are in Mockler for July 22 and August 5. They will be held in the Dean's Conference Room on the 2nd floor of 409.

Entrepreneurship Professor Looking for Student Research Assistants: Entrepreneurship has always been a vibrant force in the economy, and at the forefront of adaptation and growth of new markets. Research is needed to identify success factors, including the strategies, opportunities, and barriers confronting women-owned enterprises.

Assistance is needed on several projects that begin to examine how women entrepreneurs utilize their knowledge, resources, and innovation capabilities to recognize and evaluate strategies and opportunities within their respective industries.

Some of the responsibilities (and skill set) would include:
• Assist in identifying and assisting women entrepreneurs and their organizations create and facilitate new growth for their organizations.

• Engage in library and Internet research work in order to be exposed to recent articles in the areas of entrepreneurship strategy and innovation.

• Communicate with entrepreneurs who have questions or concerns as they answer and complete feedback questionnaires.

• Assist in the data collection and data entry process by finding secondary information on the women-owned businesses that participated in the research (e.g., both financial and non-financial data from Hoovers Online, Standard & Poor’s, etc.).

• Analyze the results of the research by examining the correlations and other descriptive statistics for each of the variables of interest (using Excel, SPSS; will be used to test proposed models).

• Formulate recommendations and strategic implications for women entrepreneurs based on overall results.

• Assist in the writing of a manuscript that will be submitted for review to a conference (e.g., Entrepreneurship Division of the Academy of Management) and revised for a refereed journal (e.g., Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice).

Financial Aid Information

From the Office of Student Financial Services
All returning students can expect to receive a bill from the Student Financial Services Office soon. Bills are scheduled to be mailed the week of July 15th for fall charges and any past due balances. Balances not covered by financial aid will be due August 15th. When determining how much you will owe, please keep in mind that the 3% origination fee for the Stafford loans is not reflected in the pending credit. If you do not receive your bill, please contact our office so that we may print and send a duplicate. You should also contact us if your aid is not reflected properly on the bill.

Students who are enrolled in at least 8 credits, are required to purchase health insurance. You may choose either the University's plan, or provide documentation of outside insurance. Studetnts are automatically billed for the University's plan unless they complete a waiver. You can complete a waiver by visiting the University Health Plans' website at www.universityhealthplans.com.

Cynics and converts, come one and all, to hear the very dynamic Mindy Lubber discuss the environmental strategies being adopted by more and more companies as sustainability gains importance.

This is an incredible opportunity to meet and hear Mindy. Former EPA regional administrator, founder of Green Century Capital Management, Communications Director to Michael Dukakis, attorney and MBA, Mindy is no slouch when it comes to tough economic decisions.

She'll be talking about cases on the cutting edge of environmental sustainability, why even skeptics need to start paying attention, and the role MBAs can play in this emerging field.

We'd love a lively discussion with the fullest range of opinions. So if you think this environmental and sustainability stuff is all a fad, then come and make your thoughts know.

STAFFED HOURS
If you need to reach a lab manager and Bill Porter is not present, you may call a lab manager at the main campus for assistance at x2769. Here are their hours.

Main Campus Lab Summer Hours:
Monday - Thursday 9am - 9pm
Friday 9am - 6pm
Saturday 9am - 4pm
Sunday 12 - 6pm

SOM Lab Summer (staffed) Hours:
Mondays - Thursday 4pm-7:30pm (Bill is around from 9am - 4pm)
Friday - Sunday 12pm-4pm

PRINTING
Please note that PDF files and other documents that contain graphics or are memory hungry take longer to print than your common Word document. We have also noticed that some PDF's cannot print successfully in WebCT. If you experience this issue, try emailing the PDF file to yourself and then try printing from your webmail account.

Also, printing from the color ink-jet printer takes longer than the laser-jet. Please be patient and refrain from sending multiple print jobs of the same document to the printer.

SOM in the News

Katie Henchir '04, was recently published in the July '03 issue of BioPharm International Magazine. Her article, Validation Outsourcing: Getting the Most for Your Client-Contractor Relationship, focuses on establishing successful client-contractor relationships for a specific discipline (Validation) in the pharmaceutical industry. The article offers a four step strategy, covering the initial engagement, the proposal, implementation, and follow-up.

The 24th Annual Simmons Leadership Conference held April 26, continues to receive press attention throughout the country, with its celebrity speakers and high-energy discussions on business. The day-long event has most recently appeared in the Galveston County (TX) Daily News.

Stacy Blake-Beard, Ph.D., SOM Professor and Research Faculty at the Center for Gender in Organizations, continues to receive press coverage for her research on the growing importance of women mentors. According to Blake-Beard’s study, the number of women receiving mentoring assistance from other women is rising, and this “may signal that more women are in positions where they may act as mentors.” The mentoring research has most recently appeared in the Cincinnati (OH) Enquirer.

SOM Professor Fiona Wilson ’SOM 97 and Associate Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands presented the findings from the research study, “Teen Girls on Business: Are they being empowered?” at the Annual Conference of the National Coalition of Girls Schools held in Charleston, SC on June 25. The Teen Girls on Business study provides a rich understanding of how middle and high school girls view business as a career and life opportunity. The Charleston presentation also received local media coverage in the Charleston Regional Business Journal on June 30.

The Simmons Prince Program in Retail Management was featured in the June 16 Hartford Courant in the article “As Texas A&M, 6 New England Schools Know, There’s Money in Managing.” The article gave a brief review the program’s history and its current focus and direction.

Professor Susan Sampson, Director of the Simmons Prince Program in Retail Management, was featured in the Tricks of the Trade column on the front page of the July 2 Wall Street Journal’s Personal Journal. In the article “A Retail Professor Shops,” Sampson says consumers don’t understand their power to negotiate on price. A piece of advice from Sampson: ask for the store manager right away – she or he has greater authority to offer markdowns.
