NOTE FROM MARY D
Congratulations on a fabulous semester!! You are all done and another semester is behind you!! There is no question you all worked really hard and your faculty were really pleased with how well your classes went. It is also a wonderful time for reflection about your accomplishments. Think about how you approach problems or situations vs how you did 6 months, a year, or two or three ago. Think about how your confidence levels have risen as a result of your experiences in the classroom-taking a stand on an issue, giving those terrific BGGE presentations that Beth and I got to observe, getting a grade or paper back that reflected all your hard work, helping explain something to a classmate so that she could better understand something. Think about things that excited you intellectually and you wished you had more time to read about or discuss. Think about how you read the paper or listen to the news. Your skill set and critical thinking will continue to evolve as you get deeper into the program. But take the time now to get some rest, spend some quality time with your family and friends and enjoy doing nothing for a moment! September will be here before you know it and we will see you when you get back!

NOTE FROM MARY D TO GRADUATING STUDENTS
Graduation for me is a truly bittersweet moment!! I am so proud of each and everyone of you and what you have accomplished. It has been wonderful to have had a chance to witness some of the personal and professional changes that you have gone through and to see how your thinking has changed, how you approach problems and situations, and view the world through multiple and ever changing lenses. People always talk about the self confidence changes that happen through the program and that is one of the best things about my job!! All of you have give credit to the faculty and your fellow students for helping these changes to happen. But you are the ones that truly deserve the credit for giving this program your heart and soul for a year or many years!! Graduation is just the beginning of another chapter in your lives and I look forward to hearing about all the great things that will soon happen for each of you. But the bittersweet part is that you will all be greatly missed. Please know that a warm welcome will always be here for you when you come back!

STUDENT ACADEMIC COUNCIL THANK YOU
Mary would like to thank all of the students that served on the student academic council this year. Over 40 of you participate in this virtual group and that is fabulous!! The SAC is a student group that volunteers to serve as an advisory council to the MBA office as we continuously try and improve the program and deal with the daily operations of running the program. They have given invaluable feedback on issues such as the schedule, closing the school during the DNC week, moving all coursepacks to Xanadu, when to start the fall semester calendar, Friday night electives, eliminating the paper master schedule, and the change in graduation location. These were just a few of the issues they tackled with Mary!

This year's group included: Shazia Bakar, Maureen Belanger, Rocio Corona, Caroline Costello, Kim Dalzell-Riedell, Miranda Daniloff, Lee Durocher, Maureen Dyer, Laura Elia, Maureen Fahey, Jennifer Fairchild, Pam Fiorelli, Laura Flores, Adrienne Frank, Morgan Gaspar, Christine Gimbel, Jennifer Goldberg, Paula Huston, Nancy Krupinsky, Diana Lambrenos, Karen Leary, Danielle Lussier, Melissa McCully, Carole Nathan, Meegan Neils, Lora Nielsen, Caryn Pang, Jessica Robinson, Anna Paiz, Janna Schwartz, Carmen Seales, Phyllis Smith, Rebecca Swartz, Lindsay Titus, DeAnna Vargas, Sarah Walker, Casey Watts and June Zammett. They were a terrific group to work with throughout this year!

SOM in the News

The Center for Gender in Organizations (CGO) is at a transition point. Since our founding in 1998, we have advanced tremendously, generating knowledge and practical applications in the areas of gender, diversity, and organizational change and establishing CGO as an international resource in the field. Now, with the Ford Foundation's very generous institutional funding having ended in June, CGO is at a crucial juncture in its organizational life. For more info click here

The 25th Annual Simmons School of Management Leadership Conference and its impressive line-up of speakers continue to gain press coverage nationwide. Articles on the premier leadership conference for women and headliners HP CEO Carly Fiorina, Erin Brockovich, Jane Fonda, and Whoopi Goldberg have recently appeared in Business Report & Journal (Savannah, GA).

Alison McNally EE ’86 has recently been named Deputy Associate Administrator for Management of NASA’s new Science Mission Directorate. McNally will be responsible for general management of the Directorate, including all resource, functional, and administrative activities. She will also chair its general management council. McNally previously served as Associate Director of the Goddard Space Flight Center.

Simmons School of Management had strong representation at the Working Mother Best Companies for Women of Color Multicultural Conference July 21-22, 2004, in New York City. SOM Professor and CGO Research Faculty Stacy Blake-Beard, Interim CGO Faculty Director Patricia Deyton, Executive Education Director Martha Sheehan, and Elaine Wilmore SOM ’97 represented the SOM. The conference features Working Mother Media’s list of the top 10 companies for women of color, and draws 600-700 attendees from around the country.

Through an invitation from Gail Long ’78, Acting SOM Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands gave a talk to the newly created women’s network within the Boston Chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth (ACG). Merrill-Sands’ talk, “Women in Business: Aspirations for Leadership and Power,” drew on findings of recent SOM/HP Leadership Conference surveys. The meeting was attended by 60 high-level women from corporations, law firms, and consulting firms within the greater Boston region. ACG has 42 chapters around the world, and positions itself as the premier professional organization focused on corporate growth, corporate development, and mergers and acquisitions.
