General Information

BETH’S MATERNITY PLAN COVERAGE
Beth has officially gone on maternity leave this week, but there is no baby as of today! We are in the process of trying to hire some help for the MBA office in her absence. She will return in mid to late December, but in the short term, please use Paula, Chris and Mary D to answer any questions you have! Thanks very much!

REMINDER OF THE EMAIL POLICY
Please note all official College email correspondence will originate from and be distributed to only simmons.edu email addresses. This was done for a number of reasons, but most importantly to ensure the safety or incoming and outgoing mail which is automatically scanned for viruses. It will also allow students to get access to all official College email correspondence. Students will be able to forward to multiple accounts. Visit http://email.simmons.edu for assistance in setting this feature up on your computers.

DAY TRACK MEETING
Monday, September 8, 11:45-12:30pm. This will be an opportunity for all students rolling forward into the day track, two year day students and students who missed foundations to meet their cohort of classmates.

STUDENTS THAT MISSED FOUNDATIONS
If you are interested in a brief overview of what happened in Foundations, would like copies of any of the handouts, or a tour please contact Mary D in the MBA office at 521-3813. We recommend all students that missed Foundations to make an appointment with the Library to get an overview of all their resources. Please call Kathy at 521-3847.

REMINDER OF CLASS NORMS
The faculty asked me to remind you of the following classroom norms as you start the academic year
* Cellphones should be turned off or to the vibrate mode as you enter class
* Please use the microphones so that everyone can hear you
* Please check Webct on a regular basis
* Please avoid going through the pit in CR2 and exit from the sides
* Please be conscious not to interrupt the faculty speaking to the class when exiting/entering class in CR1
* Please eat all dinners in the first 15 minutes of class
* Palm Pilots are not allowed in closed book exams
* If you are going to miss a class, please notify your faculty member in advance and know that you are responsible for all of the work missed.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT AMBASSADOR PROGRAM
Bridging cultural differences and understanding fellow classmates is integral to building the SOM community. The International Student Ambassador Program provides language and cultural assimilation "coaches" to our international students. If you are an international student (any student who is a non-native English speaker and/or someone not born in the U.S.) interested in meeting with a coach to improve your English, writing skills and/or understanding aspects of American culture, or, if you are an American student and would like to volunteer to be a coach, please contact Mary Dutkiewicz in the MBA Office at mary.dutkiewicz@simmons.edu

MICROWAVES AND REFRIDGERATORS
1 Microwaveand small fridge is available with the soda machines
A big fridge and a microwave are in the small study room down the hall from CR2
There is also a big fridge in 419 on the first floor
Please label and date your food!!

FLAGS
If you would like your country flag hung and do not see it, contact Chris at Christina.noe@simmons.edu. It is possible it is in CR1 or the 5th floor caseroom, but if we don’t have it, we will order it! So far, the only new request for this year is for the Ghana flag.

SAFETY AND SECURITY UPDATE
A student bike was stolen off the bike rack during foundations. While we do have regular security patrols, it is unfortunately a horrid reality of the city, so please be aware that there is some risk involved if you have a really nice bike. We are trying to identify an inside bike storage area for students in a SOM building and will keep you posted if we come up with one.

NOTE FROM MARY D
The MBA office staff and the faculty are looking forward to another great year!! The entering September class had a terrific week in Foundations and is off to a wonderful start! A warm welcome back as well to all returning students who are probably wishing they had a couple more weeks before classes begin. I encourage all of you to make the most of this last weekend off before classes begin!!

STUDENT ACADEMIC COUNCIL
Students wishing to be involved in the student academic council for the academic year 2003-04 should email mary.dutkiewicz@simmons.edu. The SAC is a student group that volunteers to serve as an advisory council to the MBA office as we continuously try and improve the program and deal with the daily operations of running the program. Last year for example, they gave us feedback on issues such as elective offerings, honor code integrity, moving internships to a noncredit status, technology issues, bookstore and coursepack issues, eliminating the master course schedule printout, flag guidelines regarding student requests to hang flags of unofficially recognized areas of a country, and keeping or eliminating February break.

Satellite Bookstore
GREAT NEWS!! The Bookstore will be in the 419 Library Building now through September 12th. To best serve the students in both day and evening programs, they will remain open from 3-8pm. They will carry all the course material for the SOM along with some fun Simmons products, so be sure to check it out. If you would like to call the store in 419, please use the number 617-521-3815.

Library

Welcome to all students, both new and returning! We look forward to working with you this year.

New students: If you missed Foundations, please stop by the library to pick up an information packet. Have you bookmarked the library web site yet? Or better yet, placed it on your toolbar?! http://www.simmons.edu/libraries/som/ If you haven’t already, take a few moments to navigate our site to learn about our resources and services.
For example, take a look at: http://www.simmons.edu/libraries/dataaz.html and click on either ABI-Inform or Business Source Premier to begin to familiarize yourself with one of these databases. These two are the ones you’ll use most often in your coursework. We welcome your questions and are here to help you use these resources.

Course packs – due to copyright regulations the library does not have copies of course packs.

Computer Lab

WE'RE HIRING
We are hiring part-time media and computer lab assistants for the fall semester. Shifts needed for evening & weekend hours. We also need class tapers (day & evening). Interested students should contact Bill Porter for an application at porterw@simmons.edu or call x3852.

LAB HOURS
The lab is open:
Monday - Saturday 7am-11pm
Sunday 7am-7pm

SOM Lab (staffed) Hours for the week of 9/1:
Tuesday - Thursday 9am-7:30pm

PRINTING
Please note that PDF files and other documents that contain graphics or are memory hungry take longer to print than your common Word document. We have also noticed that some PDF's cannot print successfully in WebCT. If you experience this issue, try emailing the PDF file to yourself and then try printing from your webmail account.

Also, printing from the color ink-jet printer takes longer than the laser-jet. Please be patient and refrain from sending multiple print jobs of the same document to the printer.

SOM in the News

Simmons named a “best college” by both US News & World Report and Princeton Review In August, Simmons College was named a “Best College” in its category (master’s level universities, northern US) in the 2004 US News & World Report. Simmons was also included in the 2004 Princeton Review “Best 351 Colleges,” and was named one of the “best in New England” in the first-ever edition of Princeton Review’s “Best Northeastern Colleges.”

Mass High Tech magazine featured Dr. Jill Kickul, Elizabeth J. McCandless Professor of Entrepreneurship, in its September 3rd issue. The article, “A study in entrepreneurial immersion,” sheds light on Kickul’s interest and background in entrepreneurship, and shares her vision for growing the entrepreneurship curriculum at the SOM.

Deborah Merrill-Sands, SOM Associate Dean and CGO Faculty Affiliate, authored an opinion article in the August 27th Women’s eNews, an online women’s news resource. Merrill-Sands’s piece “Girls’ gains in school don’t subtract from boys” is a counterpoint to recent reporting in BusinessWeek of girls making gains in the classroom at the expense of boys educational performance. The article also ran in the August 30th issue of The Valley News (NH).

On Thursday, August 7, the Boston Stock Exchange welcomed the 2003 SOM graduating class to ring the opening bell in celebration of obtaining their MBA degree. The event, attended by a members of the Class of 2003 and Dean Patricia O’Brien, was covered in the August 27th issue of the Boston Business Journal.
