NOTE FROM MARY D
Today marks the second anniversary of the September 11 attacks, and we are reminded of the tragic events of that horrible day, and we honor the many individuals who died that morning as well as the others who worked tirelessly around the clock to save as many people as they could. It is a day that may stir a lot of internal emotions related to your family, friends, communities and country and the importance of working towards peace.

The International Student Ambassador Program provides language and cultural assimilation "coaches" to our international students. If you are an international student (any student who is a non-native English speaker and/or someone not born in the U.S.) interested in meeting with a coach to improve your English, writing skills and/or understanding aspects of American culture, or, if you are an American student and would like to volunteer to be a coach, please contact Mary Dutkiewicz in the MBA Office at mary.dutkiewicz@simmons.edu

FLAGS
If you would like your country flag hung and do not see it, contact Chris at Christina.noe@simmons.edu. It is possible it is in CR1 or the 5th floor caseroom, but if we don’t have it, we will order it! So far, the only new request for this year is for the Ghana flag.

SAFETY AND SECURITY UPDATE
A student bike was stolen off the bike rack during foundations. While we do have regular security patrols, it is unfortunately a horrid reality of the city, so please be aware that there is some risk involved if you have a really nice bike. Library

Welcome to all students, both new and returning! We look forward to working with you this year.

Library staffing update:

Sept. 12, Friday, is/was librarian Denise Davis’ last day at the SOM. The next SOM librarian has not yet been hired, but candidates from a robust applicant pool are being interviewed, and you will soon have a highly qualified librarian on board to serve you. Meanwhile, Kathy Berger, M.B.A., and library assistant, is always ready, willing and eager to help you – thanks Kathy!

From Denise – Students, best of luck as you pursue your degree (former classmates – it was great to see you in action in the caseroom too). I’ve enjoyed working at the SOM and feel fortunate to have experienced such a special community “up close and personal.”

Suggestions/Need help?
We want your suggestions. Please share them with any member of the Library team. And if you need help just ask!

New students: If you missed Foundations, please stop by the library to pick up an information packet. Have you bookmarked the library web site yet? Or better yet, placed it on your toolbar?! http://www.simmons.edu/libraries/som/ If you haven’t already, take a few moments to navigate our site to learn about our resources and services.
For example, take a look at: http://www.simmons.edu/libraries/dataaz.html and click on either ABI-Inform or Business Source Premier to begin to familiarize yourself with one of these databases. These two are the ones you’ll use most often in your coursework. We welcome your questions and are here to help you use these resources.

Course packs – due to copyright regulations the library does not have copies of course packs.

Computer Lab

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT SAVING FILES:
You may have noticed problems with the floppy drives. We are aware of the problem and are trying to fix it as soon as possible. Until then you may save your files to CD, Zip disk or the student drive. If you need to use a floppy disk, then use the computers located in the library. We are sorry about the inconvenience.

WE'RE HIRING We are hiring part-time media and computer lab assistants for the fall semester. Shifts needed for evening & weekend hours. We also need class tapers (day & evening). Interested students should contact Bill Porter for an application at porterw@simmons.edu or call x3852.

LAB HOURS
The lab is open:
Monday - Saturday 7am-11pm
Sunday 7am-7pm

SOM Lab (staffed) Hours for the week of 9/8:
Tuesday - Thursday 9am-6pm
We will be expanding our staffed hours next week. That includes having staff on the weekends.

PRINTING
Please note that PDF files and other documents that contain graphics or are memory hungry take longer to print than your common Word document. We have also noticed that some PDF's cannot print successfully in WebCT. If you experience this issue, try emailing the PDF file to yourself and then try printing from your webmail account.

Also, printing from the color ink-jet printer takes longer than the laser-jet. Please be patient and refrain from sending multiple print jobs of the same document to the printer.

SOM in the News

Simmons named a “best college” by both US News & World Report and Princeton Review In August, Simmons College was named a “Best College” in its category (master’s level universities, northern US) in the 2004 US News & World Report. Simmons was also included in the 2004 Princeton Review “Best 351 Colleges,” and was named one of the “best in New England” in the first-ever edition of Princeton Review’s “Best Northeastern Colleges.”

Mass High Tech magazine featured Dr. Jill Kickul, Elizabeth J. McCandless Professor of Entrepreneurship, in its September 3rd issue. The article, “A study in entrepreneurial immersion,” sheds light on Kickul’s interest and background in entrepreneurship, and shares her vision for growing the entrepreneurship curriculum at the SOM.

Deborah Merrill-Sands, SOM Associate Dean and CGO Faculty Affiliate, authored an opinion article in the August 27th Women’s eNews, an online women’s news resource. Merrill-Sands’s piece “Girls’ gains in school don’t subtract from boys” is a counterpoint to recent reporting in BusinessWeek of girls making gains in the classroom at the expense of boys educational performance. The article also ran in the August 30th issue of The Valley News (NH).

On Thursday, August 7, the Boston Stock Exchange welcomed the 2003 SOM graduating class to ring the opening bell in celebration of obtaining their MBA degree. The event, attended by a members of the Class of 2003 and Dean Patricia O’Brien, was covered in the August 27th issue of the Boston Business Journal.
