SOM Fall Telethon The Office of Development and Alumnae Relations (ODAR) is seeking volunteers for our Fall Telethon. Telethons are an important component of achieving our Annual Fund goal, and also provide a great opportunity for students to meet and network with SOM alumnae who also volunteer for the telethon. Your participation is essential if we are to acheive our goal. Note that no experience is necessary – we will train and have fun while we're doing it! Please join us to help the SOM reach its goals for 2005. This year's priorities include: the Entrepreneurship and Diversity Initiatives, the Corporate Outreach Initiative, Leadership and Accountability, and the Center for Gender in Organizations. We provide delicious refreshments, good spirit, and great prizes to our volunteer callers. So check your calendars and contact Corinne Sirianos at 617.521.3825 or corinne.sirianos@simmons.edu to sign up. If you can’t be there in person, but you would still like to help, please drop us a line about the Phone from Home program, which allows you to make calls at your convenience. Interested

CALL! - Student Business Cards BITTERSWEET
TRANSITION NEWS FROM THE MBA OFFICE Professionally, Beth is very talented and has a wonderful relationship with our students and faculty. Customer service is one of our top priorities in the MBA office and Beth is one of the best at it. She was responsible for the schedule, international students, student organizations and many other key areas in our office. The schedule is a major puzzle to put together and she did a fabulous job managing it. International students and student groups flourished under her leadership. Student satisfaction has continued to grow higher each year and she has had a direct role in it. Personally, she definitely livened our office up as she has a wonderful sense of humor and was a true team member in our staff. We will miss her a lot, but this is a fabulous opportunity for her to combine a lot of the skills she has gained over her 6 years at the SOM and it is a good professional move for Beth. Beth’s last day will be September 23. We wish her nothing but continued success as she moves to a new stage of her professional life. Student

The Office of Student Financial Services welcomes you to Simmons and welcomes back many of you!
Office Hours: The fall semester is off to a seamless start! Stafford Loan funds for the semester have arrived and refunds to students are currently being processed. Private Loan funds are expected to arrive beginning on Thursday. If you would like to check on the status of your refund, please feel free to contact one of our Student Account Representatives. Kevin
Wolf x2011 The Student Account Representatives can also assist you with questions concerning payments made, balances due, or medical insurance waivers. Financial Aid Officers are also available to answer questions about your loans. Aid Officers hold walk-in hours Monday through Thursday from 8:30am to 5:30pm. You can also make a scheduled appointment with your aid officer by calling her directly, or by calling our main line at x2001. Students are assigned a Financial Aid Officer by the first letter of their last name. The caseloads are as follows:
A-E Amanda Cornwall x2033 If, for any reason, your loan funds have not been credited to your student account by the end of the week, please contact our office to determine if additional information is needed. The most common reasons for loan funds not crediting onto a student's account are failure to complete entrance counseling or to sign the promissory note (for incoming students), and a change in enrollment from the intended credits provided on the supplemental information form. The
Registrar's Office is responsible for completing paperwork regarding
the deferment of previous educational loans. Now that the add/drop period
has ended, the Registrar's Office will report enrollment for all students
to the National Student Clearinghouse. Your loan lenders and servicers
will pull your enrollment information from the Clearinghouse and automatically
defer your loans. This process can take up to 30 days depending on how
often your servicer pulls the information. You may be required to make
loan payments during the months of September and October until your
deferment is processed. Please contact your servicer directly to confirm
that this process has been completed. |

If you'd like to learn more about this hot marketing concept, AMA Boston has the event for you. Come Join us as Rebecca Leonard, Supervisor, Brand Development at Sam Adams discusses how Experiential Marketing can create loyalty and drive brand equity for your company! Experiential marketing moves beyond the traditional "feature & benefit" approach and adds emotion to the marketing mix. Respected brand relationships forge a strong emotional tie that forms a bond of lasting loyalty between consumers and the brand. Markets have undergone a profound transformation after decades of top-down corporate messaging. Consumers want more than mass messages sent to eyeballs. They want respect, recognition and relevant communication, and they've indicated that the best way to give it to them is through experiences that are personally memorable, emotional and meaningful. Don't miss your chance to discover how Experiential Marketing can deliver value to your organization! To register, please call 781.647.7555 or fax to 781.647.7222. IN THE NEWS Nakeya Turner has recently been selected as one of two participants in the Program for Emerging Professional Women. This is a brand new program in Massachusetts offered through the Women’s Transportation Seminar-Boston Chapter, for her potential as a future leader in the transportation industry. Nakeya is a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) employee. The Program for Emerging Professional Women is a new initiative for the WTS-Boston Chapter with a goal to assist in the development of future leaders by providing paid WTS-Boston Chapter membership and member benefits to women with promise whose involvement in WTS is not financially supported by their employers. Selected participants also receive a one-year "advisor" commitment from a senior member. Miranda Daniloff, a current evening student wrote this article that recently appeared in the Christian Science Monitor, that reflects some sentiments about new beginnings and steps. Some nice parallels to the MBA program can be drawn! http://www.csmonitor.com/2004/0910/p09s01-coop.html ALUMNAE IN THE NEWS Kristin Reynolds, ’03 has recently passed the Level 1 CFA Exam administered in June 2004. The CFA is the Chartered Financial Analyst Program and the pass rate for the Level I exam in 2002 was 44% and shows how significant an accomplishment this is! The 25th annual Simmons School of Management Leadership Conference was mentioned in an August 8 article of CEO Refresher (Etobicoke, ON). In the article “Thinking outside the Gender Box,” the author mentions HP CEO Carly Fiorina’s address to the Leadership Conference, specifically in regard to gender roles in leadership in the 21st century. Dee Lee SOM ’93 is a participant in the upcoming Women & Money conference to be held at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Center, Boston, on October 2. Conference will focus on money management, retirement and investment strategies for all ages, racial, ethnic and economic backgrounds, and levels of financial knowledge. Simmons School of Management co-founders and first deans Ann Jardim and Margaret Hennig were cited in the article “Our earliest mentors: Is there a father in the house?” The article mentions research the two former deans conducted for their book, The Managerial Woman, which found that the top 25 female achievers in American business had fathers who encouraged them to excel. The article appeared in nearly 40 publications nationwide on July 27, and those included San Francisco Business Times, Portland Business Journal, and the Baltimore Business Journal. Andrea Lyons SOM ’89 was featured on the Ladies Who Launch Web site (www.ladieswholaunch.com), a site devote to women in business and entrepreneurship. The online article gave the story behind Lyons’ launch of Goddess Granola and her outlook on business life. The Simmons MBA program was the focus of the article “Putting women first: The Simmons MBA” in the September 15 edition of Boston Globe. The article detailed the program’s strengths in educating women for business, its unique qualities among other business schools, and how women re-enter the workforce with a greater understanding how others contribute to the bottom line. Assistant Dean for Marketing Andrea Bruce was quoted extensively in the article. The Center for Gender in Organizations has released its latest in the CGO Commentaries series, “Releasing the Double Bind of Visibility for Minorities in the Workplace.” Looking at lessons learned from the first season of NBC's The Apprentice, authors Stacy Blake-Beard, CGO faculty affiliate, and Laura Morgan Roberts of Harvard Business School discuss two frequently employed visibility strategies and their implications for minorities who choose to use them. They also offer advice on how minorities can strategically manage their visibility most effectively in work organizations. EVENTS Executive
