General Information

OPERATIONS UPDATE
The Coke machine swipe card is working again! We are working on changing back the ID access on Sundays until 11pm. Someone switched it to 7pm. We are working on the swipe card for the candy machine now!

NOTE FROM MARY D
As I have talked to a lot of students this week, you can sense the first crunch in the MBA program has started. New students have their Econ exam. Day students will have two new 3 credit courses added to their already full schedules. Finance students have their first spreadsheet assignments coming due. Accounting midterms are just around the corner. Just remember that this is a marathon and not a sprint, pace yourselves for the rest of the semester, study hard, take some time for yourself, try to keep everything in perspective. If you are feeling a bit overwhelmed, believe it or not, you are not alone!! If you are struggling, talk to me, talk to your faculty, or talk to your study group. We are through the first month and we are all in it together!

REMINDER OF CLASS NORMS
The faculty asked me to remind you of the following classroom norms as you start the academic year. We understand that sometimes you need to leave class, but our goal is to raise the consciousness of everyone with these issues in order to maximize the learning environment and minimize disruptions as much as we can.
* Cellphones should be turned off or to the vibrate mode as you enter class
* Please use the microphones so that everyone can hear you
* Please check WebCT on a regular basis
* Please avoid going through the pit in CR2 and exit from the sides
* Please be conscious not to interrupt the faculty speaking to the class when exiting/entering class in CR1
* Please eat all dinners in the first 15 minutes of class
*Please try an minimize getting up and down numerous times during class
* Palm Pilots are not allowed in closed book exams
* If you are going to miss a class, please notify your faculty member in advance and know that you are responsible for all of the work missed.

MBA STAFF COVERAGE UNTIL BETH’S REPLACEMENT IS HIRED
Beth has officially left the SOM as of this week and we are in the process of hiring her replacement. We have posted the position and may ask students to be involved in the interview process once we get further along in the process. In the short term, please use Paula, Chris and Mary D to answer any questions you have! Thanks very much!

Tuesday, November 9, 2004, 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM
Simmons College, 300 the Fenway, East Wing, 1st Floor of the Advancement Hall

The Office of Development and Alumnae Relations (ODAR) is seeking volunteers for our Fall Telethon. Telethons are an important component of achieving our Annual Fund goal, and also provide a great opportunity for students to meet and network with SOM alumnae who also volunteer for the telethon. Your participation is essential if we are to acheive our goal. Note that no experience is necessary – we will train and have fun while we're doing it! Please join us to help the SOM reach its goals for 2005. This year's priorities include: the Entrepreneurship and Diversity Initiatives, the Corporate Outreach Initiative, Leadership and Accountability, and the Center for Gender in Organizations. We provide delicious refreshments, good spirit, and great prizes to our volunteer callers. So check your calendars and contact Corinne Sirianos at 617.521.3825 or corinne.sirianos@simmons.edu to sign up. If you can’t be there in person, but you would still like to help, please drop us a line about the Phone from Home program, which allows you to make calls at your convenience.

STUDENT ACADEMIC COUNCIL
Students wishing to be involved in the student academic council for the academic year 2004-05 should email mary.dutkiewicz@simmons.edu. The SAC is a virtual student group who volunteer to serve as an advisory council to the MBA office as we continuously try and improve the program and deal with the daily operations of running the program. It is great way to get involved in the school!! Last year for example, they gave us invaluable feedback on issues such as the schedule, closing the school during the DNC week, moving all coursepacks to Xanadu, when to start the fall semester calendar, Friday night electives, eliminating the paper master schedule, and the change in graduation location. Students who were on it last year should re-confirm their continued interest, and we’re hoping you all stay involved!! For new students considering it, the time commitment is not extensive.

OPERATIONS UPDATES

Student Financial Services

The Office of Student Financial Services welcomes you to Simmons and welcomes back many of you!

Office Hours:
Monday - Thursday 8:30am - 5:30pm
Friday 8:30am - 4:30pm

The fall semester is off to a seamless start! Stafford Loan funds for the semester have arrived and refunds to students are currently being processed. Private Loan funds are expected to arrive beginning on Thursday. If you would like to check on the status of your refund, please feel free to contact one of our Student Account Representatives.

Kevin Wolf x2011
Kevin Wright x2010
Nicole Torra x2009

The Student Account Representatives can also assist you with questions concerning payments made, balances due, or medical insurance waivers.

Financial Aid Officers are also available to answer questions about your loans. Aid Officers hold walk-in hours Monday through Thursday from 8:30am to 5:30pm. You can also make a scheduled appointment with your aid officer by calling her directly, or by calling our main line at x2001. Students are assigned a Financial Aid Officer by the first letter of their last name. The caseloads are as follows:

A-E Amanda Cornwall x2033
F-L Sharon Lightfoot x2032
M-R Leslie Czwakiel x2885
S-Z Heather Patenaude x2142

If, for any reason, your loan funds have not been credited to your student account by the end of the week, please contact our office to determine if additional information is needed. The most common reasons for loan funds not crediting onto a student's account are failure to complete entrance counseling or to sign the promissory note (for incoming students), and a change in enrollment from the intended credits provided on the supplemental information form.

The Registrar's Office is responsible for completing paperwork regarding the deferment of previous educational loans. Now that the add/drop period has ended, the Registrar's Office will report enrollment for all students to the National Student Clearinghouse. Your loan lenders and servicers will pull your enrollment information from the Clearinghouse and automatically defer your loans. This process can take up to 30 days depending on how often your servicer pulls the information. You may be required to make loan payments during the months of September and October until your deferment is processed. Please contact your servicer directly to confirm that this process has been completed.
